
Spiders Hold Off Fairfield Sunday

Richmond, Va.— Goalie Zach Vigue and the Spiders defense held strong Sunday as the University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse Team escaped Fairfield, 10-8.
Vigue recorded eight saves and the defense was once again perfect in man-down situations, holding the Stags scoreless on their five extra-man opportunities.
Richmond scored first when Dalton Young connected on a pass from Luke Grayum in the hole followed by a Fairfield goal and another Richmond score, this time from Derrek Madonna off a Lance Madonna pass.
Fairfield committed its first of seven penalties before Henry Alpaugh scored a man-up goal off another assist from Grayum, then the Stags responded back with two goals to tie the game at three after the first quarter.
The second opened with Fairfield scoring, but Richmond would respond with three unanswered goals to make it 6-4 and give the Spiders their largest lead of the day. Derrek Madonna scored unassisted, then Grayum connected on a feed from Alpaugh and Aidan O'Neil found the cage off the first of Young's four assists on the day.
Fairfield scored once more, then Grayum scored his second goal of the day and Young chipped in the assist to give Richmond a 7-5 lead at the half. The Spiders would tale the three-goal lead through the second half to the end as both teams added three more goals in the third and fourth quarters. All of Richmond's second half goals came from Lance Madonna with Joe Gooley adding the assist on the first (man-up) and Young on the next two.
Up one goal headed into the fourth quarter, the Stags tied the game at eight apiece at the 13:53 mark, but Lance Madonna would respond with two more goals to secure his first hat trick of the season, including one with 53 seconds left to put the Spiders up by two and close the door on Fairfield. The Spiders advanced to 3-1, while the Stags are now an even 2-2.
The Spiders held the advantage on face offs (12-9), shots (39-26) and clears, going a perfect 21-21 while Fairfield was 22-25. Richmond made the most of Fairfield's mistakes, picking up seven caused turnovers led by Hunter Smith and Jake Saunders with two each.
The Spiders visit No. 1 Virginia in Charlottesville Saturday for a 6:00 face off.
