02/04/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
College Park, Md. – The University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse Team fell 15-4 in its season opener against Maryland Saturday.
The second-ranked defending national champions jumped to a 3-0 lead early in the fourth quarter before freshman Joe Sheridan recorded his first collegiate goal, shooting through two Maryland defenders while taking a big hit that resulted in an illegal body check call on the Terrapins. No. 20 Richmond wouldn't score again for the next two quarters as Maryland poured on nine answered goals in the second and third frames.
Dalton Young scored twice in the fourth quarter, with his first goal of the season coming after he picked up a ground ball during a failed Maryland clear attempt. Young gained possession at Maryland's restraining line before turning around and firing a shot past the Terrapins goalie. His second of the day came just over two minutes later when he ripped a shot to the bottom left corner of the cage off a feed from freshman Aidan O'Neil.
O'Neil scored the final goal of the day for the Spiders as he came from behind the cage and worked around a Maryland defender for an across-the-body shot that bounced between the goalie's legs.
The Spiders caused seven turnovers and picked up 30 ground balls while Maryland tallied 12 caused turnovers and 35 ground balls. The two teams were nearly even at the face off circle, with Richmond winning 11-of-23 compared to Maryland's 12.
In goal. Zach Vigue made seven saves while Devin Craven finished out the game, coming in at the start of the fourth quarter and recording two stops. Of Richmond's 42 shots taken on the day, 19 were on target, while Maryland was 24-for-34 with shots on cage.
The Spiders have next weekend off before hosting Bucknell at home on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 am.
