Upset Under the Lights: Spiders Take Down #7/10 Virginia in Double OT

Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond Women's Lacrosse team upset the #7/10 ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers in thrilling double overtime fashion on Wednesday evening. Veterans of the team stepped up in the key moments, and some new starters were handed the keys in an exciting Spiders victory.Â
Senior Arden Tierney scored the diving goal for Richmond at the beginning of the second overtime period (4:48) to solidify the win for the Spiders. This was goal number three on the night for Tierney as she has been crowned one of the heroes of this game. Along with her game-winning score, Tierney created an assist, a caused turnover and two draw controls. She now sits at number two in program history with 267 draw controls. Â
Senior, Emilie Bloyer had the game of her career this evening coming away with the win in the net. This was her first start of the season, as well as her first win. Heading into the first overtime period, Bloyer had three saves. Through both overtime periods, Bloyer caught four more to block out the Cavaliers from a sudden-death victory. Bloyer played lights-out in the most necessary times, being crowned another hero of the game.Â
Senior, Lindsey Frank put up very impressive numbers on the game as she brought in four goals for the Spiders alongside five draw controls. At 6:37 in the fourth quarter, Frank scored the fifteenth goal for Richmond, putting them at a 15-12 lead at the time. This goal from Frank shifted much of the momentum in favor of the Spiders.Â
Sophomore, Grace Muldoon also rang in a hat trick in the matchup as she found the back of the net for three scores. Her final goal at 5:04 in the third quarter gave the Spiders their first lead of the night. From there, Richmond was able to hold Virginia to a tied score or maintaining the margin. Along with her goals, Muldoon had a part in more scoring with three assists, a team high for the game. Muldoon was a threat all over the field as she controlled the circle with four draw controls.
Sophomore, Colleen Quinn stepped up majorly for the Spiders tonight as another hat trick was earned with three goals on the evening. Quinn has proved to be a shifty scorer for the Spiders as she continued to come up with creative shots through the game. All of her goals came through the first half as she held a big part in the win.Â
Sophia DiCenso, the senior midfielder for Richmond played her usual all-around style on the night as she knocked through a goal at the beginning of the second quarter to bring Richmond to a 4-3 margin, shortening the Cavaliers margin to a one-point lead while also causing two turnovers and winning two draw controls.Â
Freshman, Juliana Stanley got her first career start in today's event. Stanley played for the entirety of the game as she walks away with one goal, one assist, one ground ball, and the win. Stanley will be a player to watch for the Spiders as she has made her impact known fast with six goals at a .500 percentage.Â
Jordyn Harrison, the freshman defender got her career start this evening as well. Going against the #7/10 offense in the NCAA, Harrison held strong on defense through the competition causing one turnover and holding off the Cavaliers offense in key moments. Harrison is another freshman who has made her impact known fast for the program.Â
The stats overall remained mirrored throughout the majority of the game, creating a back and forth battle between the programs. Both teams shot 36 times, with Richmond making one more shot than Virginia (23 to Virginia's 22). Goalies for each side had 7 saves per team. Richmond gained 14 ground balls as Virginia had 11. In the draw circle Richmond held 17 draw controls to Virginia's 19.Â
This game was the first double overtime game played at Robins Stadium. The last double overtime women's lacrosse game at the University of Richmond was on March 29, 2009 as the Spiders beat Duquesne 14-13 in two extra periods. That game was one year prior to Robins Stadium being built.Â
The last time that Richmond took a win against Virginia was on February 26, 2020 as they took the 13-12 victory in similar fashion with a single overtime finale. Lindsey Frank shot the game winning goal that day to lead the Spiders to a major upset against the #6 ranked Cavaliers.Â
This win is the first at home against Virginia since March 1, 2006 when the Spiders took down the #7 ranked Cavaliers by a score of 8-7, yet another one-point margin victory, in extra minutes, against the #7 team in the country. Today's win is only the second ever win for Richmond over Virginia on home territory.Â
The Spiders had much to prove this game as this was their first week unranked through polls. Their win over the #7/10 Virginia team proves they have what it takes to climb through the rankings.Â
Richmond will return to action on Saturday, March 18 as they host the VCU Rams at Robins Stadium with a 5 p.m. start time.Â
