Late Rally Falls Short for Spider Baseball in A-10 Opener

Richmond, now 11-15 on the season, and the Hawks (9-12) return to Pitt Field Saturday for game two of the league series with first pitch set for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
The Spiders fell behind quickly as the Hawks got five runs off of three home runs for a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Richmond broke through as Christian Beal doubled and Alden Mathes reached after getting hit by a pitch. Johnny Hipsman picked up Beal for the Spiders first run, with a base hit through the infield, pushing Mathes to third. Mathes then scored on Jordan Jaffe's check swing ground out.
The Richmond offense got on the Hawks starter, but the Hawk bats jumped on the Spider pitching, putting up five runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Jared Sprague-Lott led off with a base hit to left in the bottom of the fifth and was pushed to second on Chase Conklin's walk. Sprague-Lott scored on Mikey Kluska's base hit to the gap in right. Conklin tallied the second run on Mathes' fielder's choice to the right side. Mathes then scored from first on Jason Neff's double to left for the Spiders' third run of the frame, cutting the Hawks lead in half, 10-5.
The Spiders added single runs in the sixth and seventh. Jaffe led off the sixth with his second solo home run of the season to straight away centerfield. Sprague-Lott drew a bases loaded walk to force in Hipsman, to put the Spiders within 17-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kluska got the Spiders going with a base hit up the middle and took second on Mathes' hit to right. With two outs, Hipsman hit his fourth home run of the season down the left field line, pushing the Spiders within 17-10. Jaffe drew a walk, then Jake Elbeery collected an infield single before Sprague-Lott doubled in Jaffe. Both Elbeery and Sprauge-Lott scored on Matt Stinebiser's pinch-hit base hit to put the Spiders within four, 17-13.
The Hawks added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Beal drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, but he was stranded.
UR starter Brenden Argomaniz took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work. Esteban Rodriguez allowed nine runs, on nine hits with three strikeouts in two innings of work. Jimmy Starnes gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts in three innings, his longest outing of the season.
