Spider Baseball Tops Canisius, 12-2

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Baseball team collected a third-straight home victory Saturday with a 12-2 victory over Canisius as part of the Central Virginia Challenge at Pitt Field.
Richmond, now 3-6 on the season, returns to Pitt Field Sunday to host West Virginia in the final game of the Central Virginia Challenge. First pitch is set for noon on ESPN+.
After two scoreless frames from Richmond starter Brock Weirather, the Griffins tallied their only two runs in the top of the third. Canisius batters connected back-to-back doubles and well-placed ground outs to push home the runs. Weirather (1-1) buckled down and tossed three more scoreless frames for the Spiders, finishing his outing with two runs on five hits and four strikeouts over six innings.
Brenden Argomaniz tossed two scoreless frames, allowing a hit, a walk and an error with two strikeouts to keep the Griffin offense at bay.
Richmond bats answered in the bottom of the third as D.J. Pacheco scored on a ground out after leading off the frame with a walk.
Jason Neff started the fourth with a walk and was followed by a Johnny Hipsman double. Neff scored on Jared Sprague-Lott's sacrifice fly to tie the game. Mikey Kluska pushed Hipsman home on a base hit down the left field line. Christian Beal doubled in Pacheco and Kluska to put the Spiders up 5-2, all with one out. Jordan Jaffe collected an RBI-single to score Beal before Alden Mathes, who reached after getting hit by a pitch, scored on Jake Elbeery's sacrifice fly to give Richmond a 7-2 lead.
Spider bats got hot again in the bottom of the eighth. After Pacheco doubled and Kluska singled, Beal doubled in Pacheco, as Kluska had to hold up at second to make sure the ball got down. Mathes reached on an error as Kluska then scored from second. Jaffe tallied his second RBI base hit to score Beal. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hipsman doubled in Mathes and Jaffe to give the Spiders the walk-off 10-run rule victory.
Hipsman paced the Spiders with a three-for-five day at the plate with two doubles adn two RBI. Kluska went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored as Beal chipped in two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Pacheco tallied two hits and scored three times.
