Spiders Split Doubleheader; Neff & Subers Toss Combined One-Hit Shutout

FAIRFAX, Va. – Richmond Baseball split the Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader against George Mason Saturday. The Patriots took a close 4-3 victory in game one, while the Spiders collected a 7-0 win in game two.
The series finale between Richmond (19-23, 8-6 A-10) and George Mason (21-21, 7-7 A-10) is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN+.
Game two Richmond pitchers Jeremy Neff and Kyle Subers combined to toss a one-hit shutout. Jeremy Neff, collecting his third win of the season, tossed six innings of hitless action, scattering four walks and a hit batter with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Subers picked up his first save on the year, walking one and hitting one batter before Mason broke up the no-hitter with one out in the top of the ninth. The Spiders then turned a double play to collect the victory.
The Spiders big offensive inning came in the fifth, posting five runs on three hits. Jake Elbeery reached on a bunt single and was followed by walks drawn by Zach Lass and Mikey Kluska to load the bases and force the Mason starter out of the game. Elbeery scored on Jared Sprague-Lott's sacrifice fly to center to take a 1-0 lead. Johnny Hipsman then cleared the bases with a triple to left, pushing the Spiders lead to 3-0. Jordan Jaffe launched his ninth home run of the season to left to pick up Hipsman at third and give UR a 5-0 lead.
Richmond added two insurance runs in the seventh. Sprague-Lott and Jaffe collected base hits to reach, then scored on a two-out Mason throwing error.
In the first game of the day, the Spiders scored first in the second inning. After reaching on a base hit to right center, Christian Beal scored on Jake Elbeery's infield hit to give UR a 1-0 lead.
Mason got to Richmond starter Brock Weirather in the fifth inning. Weirather finished the day allowing three runs on five hits, a walk and one hit batter with five strikeouts over four and a third of an inning of work. Esteban Rodriguez got the last two outs of the fifth.
Richmond got a run back in the top of the sixth when Alden Mathes, after legging out a lead-off double, scored on Jason Neff's base hit to left center.
Mason would pick up their fourth run of the game in the sixth off Rodriguez. He finished the day scattering two hits, three walks and a hit batter over three and two-thirds innings of work.
In the top of the ninth, Mikey Kluska and Johnny Hipsman both got base hits. With two outs, Mathes loaded the bases with an infield single. Jason Neff sent a sharp line drive back at the pitcher to score Kluska and make it 4-3 before the final out one batter later.
