Spiders Notch First Season-Opening win Since 2016 over Longwood
08/17/2023 | Women's Soccer
FARMVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond Women's Soccer team opened the 2023 season with a thrilling 1-0 win over Longwood Thursday night on the road. The victory marked the first season-opening win since 2016 and the first regular-season victory under the new direction of Head Coach Adam Denton. With the win, the Spiders move to 1-0 on the young season while the Lancers fell to 0-1.
GOALS
9' – UR: Molly Wierman (assisted by Hannah Antonick)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After back-and-forth possession through the first five minutes, senior Hannah Antonick played in a second-chance ball against the run of play, which found the foot of graduate Molly Wierman. Wierman lined up the shot and netted the goal past Lancer keeper Mary Kate Levush.
NOTES ON THE GAME
FROM HEAD COACH ADAM DENTON
"It was an intense first game. The first game is always full of nerves for both teams, and it's obviously more difficult on the road. We scored against the run of play. I don't think we started the game particularly well, which was disappointing, but the goal settled us down a little bit. We didn't possess the ball as well as we should have and we needed to win a lot more second-chance balls."
UP NEXT
The Spiders will play host to Nevada on Sunday Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. at President's Field for the 2023 home opener.
