Spiders Draw with Nevada in 2023 Home Opener
08/20/2023 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – Behind nine total shots and two on frame, the University of Richmond Women's Soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with Nevada Sunday afternoon in the 2023 home opener. With the win, the Spiders move to 1-0-1 on the year while the Wolf Pack move to 0-1-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Richmond contained the Nevada offense in the first half as the Wolf Pack quickly got a shot off in the first minute. After settling into the game, junior Sofia Mancino recorded a shot that narrowly went over the goal. Mancino would put up another shot in the final seconds of the first half, but would miss wide.
Richmond found confidence in the second half, as graduate Molly Wierman recorded a shot in the 47th minute, and senior Elyse Kimball would narrowly miss the frame in the 68th minute. In the final minute of action, Richmond had one last opportunity to score off a corner kick, but senior Casey Merz would just miss right of the frame to collect the 0-0 draw.
NOTES ON THE GAME
"We started the game on the back foot, they pushed us back into our defensive end in the first 10 minutes so we didn't get a rhythm in the game which was disappointing, especially being at home. After the water break, we started to settle and began to play our game. We competed and started to keep possession of the ball to create opportunities like Nevada had in the first 15 minutes. In the second-half I think they had a lot of good looks, so did we, but overall we're pleased with the result, just disappointed on how we started the game."
UP NEXT
The Spiders will look to continue their strong start, playing host to William & Mary Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. at President's Field at River Road. Following the match with the Tribe, the Spiders will travel to ODU on Aug. 27 to take on the Monarch at 6 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
