Spiders Earn First Win Of Season Over Delaware State

Richmond, Va. – Backed by its highest offensive output of the season and standout performances on defense and special teams, the University of Richmond football team earned its first win of the season Saturday, defeating Delaware State 38-6 at Robins Stadium. With the win, the Spiders move to 1-2 while the Hornets dropped to an 0-3 record.
Richmond out-gained Delaware State 402-249 in the win a the Spiders defense forced Delaware State into a pair of interceptions including a pick six and another that led to a touchdown.
Wayne Galloway returned his first career pick 81 yards for a touchdown, the first score of his career and second defensive touchdown of the season for the Spiders.
Kyle Wickersham finished the game 20-of-25 for 246 yards and his first two passing touchdowns of the season. Both came on long plays, with Nick DeGennaro scoring off a 44-yard pass and Jerry Garcia Jr. connecting on a 56-yarder. The 56 yard play came as both the longest pass and reception in both their career, respectively. DeGennaro ended the day with five catches for 65 yards, while Garcia Jr. followed with 4 receptions for 81 yards.
Milan Howard led the rushing effort with 52 yards gained on seven carries including a three-yard touchdown run setup by the first career interception for Jabril Hayes. Savon Smith added the other rushing touchdown off a two-yard carry and picked up 31 yards on the day. Fonnae Webb picked up 33 yards on six and freshman Jamaal Brown added 29 on six carries for the Spiders.
Defensively, the Spiders held up the Hornets all night, picking up 18 sack yards on four sacks led by Zander Barnett with 2.5 and Carsen Stocklinski adding another. Barnett tied Tristan Wheeler and Wayne Galloway for tackle leaders with seven each. With his fourth of the night, Tristan Wheeler reached the 400 tackles milestone and moved to sixth all-time for the Spiders with 403. He currently leads all levels of the NCAA in career tackles.
Special teams was dominant, with Andrew Lopez kicking a 40-yard field goal on the opening drive of the game and Aaron Trusler coming up big with a career-long 60-yard punt. Trusler stuck two of his three punts inside the Delaware State 20 including one downed at the Hornets own one-yard line.
Up next, the Spiders travel to Stony Brook to begin Coastal Athletic Association play. Game time is set for 3:30 at LaVelle Stadium.
