Spiders Held Up By Hampton Saturday

Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond football team fell at home to Hampton Saturday, 31-14.
The Pirates (3-1, 1-0) picked up 497 yards of total offense to Richmond's 260, outgaining the Spiders 241-30 on the ground. The Spiders move to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the loss.
Redshirt freshman Ashten Snelsire made his first career start at quarterback before true freshman Camden Coleman took over, going 24-for-34 for 224 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He was sacked three times.
Coleman connected on a seven-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Heagarty for the pair's first career touchdowns at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter. Leading to the touchdown, Coleman connected on back-to-back completions of 17 yards and three yards to Nick DeGennaro to put the Spiders at the Hampton seven yard line.
The scoring drive was set up by an Angelo Rankin Jr. interception on third down for the second of his career. Jeremiah Grant returned after missing the last two games to injury for and applied the quarterback hurry on the pick.
Later, DeGennaro pulled in a touchdown reception of his own from Coleman on a 25-yard strike to the end zone at the 8:10 mark of the fourth. DeGennaro ended the day as Richmond's leading receiver with seven catches for 91 yards.
Hampton jumped to a quick start, picking up 292 yards to Richmond's 53 in the first half and the Spiders would be forced to play catchup from there.
Hampton quarterback Chris Zellous went 24-for-34 for 256 yards and recorded a passing touchdown as well as two rushing. Pirates' running back Tymere Robinson ran in another touchdown and kicker Brian Csehoski knocked in a 24-yard field goal to aide in Hampton's highest offensive output of the season.
Defensively, Tristan Wheeler and Wayne Galloway led all tacklers with 10 each. Galloway teamed up with Matei Fitz for a sack and Mikey Jarmolowich added another. Both came as one-yard losses for the Pirates. Trae Tomlinson and Bryson Parker both added pass breakups.
Up next, Richmond welcomes Maine to Robins Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 7 for the Cancer Awareness Game Presented By West Broad Honda. Kickoff is set for 3:30.
