Townsend’s Hoop-and-Harm Solidifies Road win over Davidson Wednesday Night

DAVIDSON, N.C. – With Davidson scratching back to come within two, 56-54, and 24 seconds on the clock, Grace Townsend completed a vital hoop-and-harm to solidify a 59-54 Atlantic 10 Conference win at Davidson Wednesday night. With the win, the Spiders remain atop the A-10 with a 16-3 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play while the Wildcats fell to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in the A-10. The Spiders also picked up their first road win over the Wildcats since 1/28/17.

How it Happened
Addie Budnik began the scoring campaign for the spiders with a triple 13 seconds into the game. After a layup by the opposition, Townsend netted a triple for Richmond to give the Spiders a 6-2 lead, but the opposition stormed back with back-to-back buckets to take the lead 8-6. A pair of free throws from Addie Budnik tied the game at eight, but the Wildcats scratched back with a pair of free throws and a layup to retake the lead, 12-8. Laren VanArsdale got one final layup and a free throw off to end the first quarter with Davidson ahead, 12-11.
Budnik again got the ball rolling in the second quarter with a jumper to give UR the lead, 13-12, but a trey from Davidson following the play gave the Wildcats the lead again, 15-13. Maggie Doogan and Siobhan Ryan combined for four points for a 17-15 Richmond lead, but Davidson would tie the game at 17 off a layup. After the game was tied at 21, Rachel Ullstrom posted a layup courtesy of Doogan, which sparked a 5-0 run to give the Spiders a 26-21 advantage. Richmond then posted eight points over two minutes to end the half with a 34-26 lead.
Davidson came out of the locker room on a 6-0 run to come within two, 34-32. Ryan ended the scoring drought for the Spiders, going 3-3 at the charity stripe for a 37-34 Richmond lead. Doogan then followed the play with a layup to give UR a 39-34 lead. Townsend and Ullstrom then combined for five points, but Davidson would continue to respond on the other coast and keep the Spiders at bay, 44-39. A layup from Davidson would then cut the Richmond lead to 45-43. Both teams posted back-to-back layups as time expired to have Richmond ahead 49-47 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Doogan opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give the Spiders a 51-47 lead, and followed the play with three more points for a 54-47 lead. The Wildcats then went on a short 4-0 spurt, but Ullstrom got the Spiders back to scoring fashion with a layup to give Richmond a 56-51 lead with 3:51 left in the game. The Wildcats then posted a layup and a free throw to come within two, 56-54 with 1:49 left on the clock, but a hoop-and-harm from Townsend handed Richmond the victory, 59-54

- Doogan and Ullstrom also finished the game in double figures as Doogan posted 12 points in addition to eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks and Ullstrom finished the game with 10 points, four rebounds and an assist.
- As a team, Richmond shot 21 of 50 (42%) from the field, 6 of 17 (35.3%) from deep and 11 of 13 (84.6%) from the charity stripe. In addition, the team posted 37 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, 11 assists, eight blocks, three thefts and nine points off 10 Wildcat turnovers. The Spider bench posted 13 points, led by Ullstrom.
