GREENVILLE, S..C. — The Richmond men's golf team fired a 7-under 277 Sunday to shoot from ninth to fourth on the leaderboard on the final day of the Furman Intercollegiate. Richmond's round, which equaled its lowest of the season and matched the 18th-lowest team round in program history, was a 24-shot improvement from its score in Round 1 Saturday morning.
After shooting 17-over (301) in Round 1, which matched the highest of any school in the 15-team field, the Spiders played their final two rounds in 10-under par. The only schools to play the final 36 holes in fewer strokes than Richmond were the three teams to finish ahead of the Spiders on the final leaderboard: national powers Wake Forest, Furman, and Texas A&M.
"It was an outstanding final two rounds," said coach Adam Decker. "The final two rounds we were hanging with a few outstanding golf teams. Our start was unfortunate in Round 1 - it seemed like we all had a bad stretch at the same time. But they fought hard and stayed patient."
Freshman Carson Baez led Richmond in Round 3 with a 6-under 65, matching the fifth-lowest round in program history. Starting on the 10th hole, he shot to 3-under with an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. "They moved the tee up today and it made me go from hybrid to 7 iron [on my approach shot], which i hit right over the flag to 11 feet and drained it," said Baez. "It started to make me think forward about the potential of the round."
Baez finished the event at 1-under (212), tied for 15th among the 87 golfers in the field. It was his third straight top-20 finish this season.
Senior Cole Ekert carded a 4-under 67 Sunday to finish the event at even par (213). He tied for 19th and has now registered top-20 finishes in all four of his events this season.
Junior Drew Carlin and sophomore Quin Polin were among a group of six golfers to tie for 46th at 7-over par (213). Senior Patrick Isztwan was one shot back in a tie for 52nd.
Richmond has now finished in the top five on the team leaderboard at each of its four events this season. It's the first time the Spiders have finished in the top five of their first four events of the season since 2010.
The Spiders will conclude their fall season on Friday and Saturday at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic in Monterrey, Mexico.
