VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — For the third straight round, sophomore Maya Beasley carded the low score among Spiders Sunday at the Evie Odom Invitational, shooting a 3-over 73 to finish the event in 11th place.
Beasley's 54-hole total of 3-over par (213) helped her secure the second-best finish of her college career, trailing only her fourth-place finish at last year's UNCG Fall Invitational. She played the par 3s at Princess Anne Country Club in even-par during the event, tied for fourth in the field.
"I would say that i definitely felt like my game was trending in a good direction but just was waiting for it to all come together so it was nice to see it happen at this event," said Beasley. "What was working the best for me was my approach shots. I was hitting them closer and making the putts. I definitely trusted myself this week and was just happy to be out there and playing!"
With Beasley leading the way, the Spiders recorded a team score of 49-over par (889) to finish 13th in the 14-team field, well in front of intrastate rival JMU. UR managed the par 5s in a combined even par, best of any team.
Junior Olivia Wilkie placed second among Spiders and 50th in the field at 14-over par (224). Freshman Caroline Thompson was one shot behind in a tie for 51st.
Junior Hannah Lydic shot a 4-over 74 Sunday, second lowest among Spiders, to finish at 17-over par (227) in 57th place. Freshman Katie Magner tied for 62nd at 19-over par (229).
Richmond will wrap up its fall schedule on October 19-20 at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
"We're for sure ready for two weeks off to work on some things," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "There were lots of positives this week and what an amazing experience for the team! Princess Anne treated the girls like royalty! It was such a great weekend."
