REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team played its best event of the season in its fall finale, shooting a 40-over 904 over three rounds to place sixth in the 10-team Lady Blue Hen Invitational at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. The Spiders were led by junior Hannah Lydic, who hails from nearby Ocean View, Del. Lydic tied for 12th among 65 golfers with a 5-over 221 for her 12th career top-20 finish and first this season.
"It was so great being home and playing on a course I grew up playing," said Lydic. "My little sister and I would watch this tournament every year since we were little in hopes of playing in it in college. It was an incredible experience and a dream come true in itself. Coach and I put a lot of work in prepping for this event and it's paying off."
Lydic's 5-over for the tournament was a dozen shots better than her total in any of Richmond's previous events this season and trailed only teammate Maya Beasley's 3-over (213) at the Evie Odom Invitational for the lowest tournament by a Spider this year.
"Coach and I put a lot of work in prepping for this event and its paying off," said Lydic, who shot a 3-over 75 Sunday.
Also in the top 20 was sophomore Maya Beasley, who tied for 15th at 7-over par (223) to record her second straight top-20 finish.
Richmond's 12-over 300 team score in Round 3 was a nine-shot improvement over its 21-over 309 in Round 2 Saturday afternoon. "We had two good rounds," said coach Calle Barlow. "Now we need to work on getting three good rounds together."
Junior Lauren Jones tied for 43rd at 18-over par (234) along with sophomore Heather Appelson, who was competing as an individual. Appelson's 18-over is the lowest tournament of her collegiate career by a margin of five strokes.
Richmond's freshmen bounced back Sunday after each shooting a pair of rounds in the 80s on Saturday. Caroline Thompson, competing as an individual, posted a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 49th at 19-over par. Katie Magner led all Spiders with an even-par 72 Sunday to finish the event in 60th place at 26-over par (242).
Junior Olivia Wilkie tied for 51st (20-over 236) and senior Christine Mandile tied for 58th (24-over 240).
The Spiders placed ahead of Youngstown State (+49), Seton Hall (+50), St. John's (+54), and Long Island (+75), matching the most teams they've outscored in any of their five fall events this season.
"I'm excited to get better in the offseason and see what is to come in the spring with this group," said Barlow.
