
Spider Hockey Defeats VCU; Three Seed in A-10 Championship

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team defeated crosstown rival VCU, 1-0, at Cary Street Field Friday afternoon to wrap up the 2024 regular season.

With the victory, Richmond (11-7, 5-2) collects the three seed in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and will face two seed No. 5 Saint Joseph's (15-3, 6-1) at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7 in the second semifinal contest at Ellen Ryan Field on the campus of SJU. Top seeded UMass (14-4, 7-0) will face four seed VCU (11-6, 4-3) at 11 a.m. All games will be streamed on ESPN-plus.

The Spiders captured the program's first victory over the Rams since the 2019 season and the first postseason berth since the 2021 season.

Lainey Nichols put the Spiders on the scoreboard in the 17th minute. Emma Williams drove the sideline and sent a sharp pass to Nichols in the circle. Nichols juked her defender and sent the ball past the goalkeeper.

Spider goalkeepers Kristen Rake and Thea Conomikes combined to hold the Rams scoreless, picking up the second shutout of the season.

Valen Luna Paratore and Clara Larripa combined for four shots and one each on frame in the defensive battle. Nichols had the other two of the Spiders six shots.
