Roussell Earns 100th Richmond Win as Spiders Defeat App State

BOONE, N.C. – Despite a slow shooting night, the University of Richmond women's basketball team downed Appalachian State 73-61 on the road Sunday. With the win, the Spiders are off to the program's best start to a season since 2004-05 and improved to 6-0 on the year while the Mountaineers fell to 2-3. In addition, Head Coach Aaron Roussell earned his 100th victory at Richmond, bringing his record for the Spiders to 100-57. He is the fourth winningest coach for the women's basketball program and improved his career total to 412-179.

How it Happened
Addie Budnik opened the scoring for the Spiders with a layup before the Mountaineers responded and built an 11-4 lead. Budnik ended the scoring drought with a layup while Alicia Newell brought it within three with one of her own, 11-8. The Spiders exchanged a few buckets with the opposition before the Mountaineers built a nine-point lead, 22-13 with 1:57 left in the quarter. Doogan posted a layup while Budnik collected a free throw to end the quarter with App State ahead 22-16.
Katie Hill cut the Spider deficit to three by completing the hoop-and-harm to open the second quarter before App State rebuilt its lead to seven, 26-19. Sam Dewey posted two free throws while Hill netted an additional free throw for a 28-24 Mountaineer lead. After exchanging a few points, Hill, Doogan and Budnik went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe to tie the game at 30 to close out the half.
Ullstrom gave Richmond the lead with a layup while Doogan extended the lead to three, 34-31 off a layup to open the third frame. The Mountaineers scratched back to come within one, 36-35, but Doogan again posted a layup for a 38-35 advantage. After a lone free throw from App State, Doogan sparked a 14-0 run for the Spiders for a 52-36 UR lead. App State posted four free throws to end the third quarter with the Spiders in the lead, 52-40.
Budnik and Ally Sweeney opened the final 10 minutes with two back-to-back treys for a 58-40 advantage. The Spiders exchanged points with the Mountaineers throughout the quarter, preserving a 15-point lead. After Alicia Newell posted a layup, App State put the game within 10, 71-61 with a pair of triples. The treys wouldn't be enough as Newell posted two free throws to hand Richmond the win, 73-61.

Notes on the Game
- The Spiders improve their win-streak to six-straight games, marking the best start to a season since the 2004-05 season (10-0 start).
- Aaron Roussell earned his 100th win at Richmond, becoming only the fourth coach in Richmond women's basketball history to have 100 or more victories.
- Maggie Doogan paced the team with 23 points and was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. Addie Budnik was the only other Spider in double figures as she ended the contest with 12 points, her first double-digit game this season. Budnik was also just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 24 of 54 (44.4%) from the floor, 4 of 25 (16%) from deep and 21 of 31 (67.7%) from the charity stripe. Richmond also saw 37 rebounds, 12 assists, five blocks and 19 points off 21 App State turnovers.
- Sam Dewey posted a career-high four free throws made.
