DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Rachel Ullstrom sank 11 three-pointers, setting a new Richmond women's basketball record, as the Spiders defeated Oakland 76-49 Friday morning to open the Daytona Beach Classic. With the win, Richmond extended its win streak to seven games to start the season, while the Golden Grizzlies fell to 2-5.

How It Happened
Ullstrom opened the game with a three-pointer, while Ally Sweeney followed with a trey of her own after an Oakland basket, giving UR a 6-2 lead. Maggie Doogan and Katie Hill combined for four points, but the Golden Grizzlies closed the gap for a 10-6 Richmond lead. After a free throw from Anna Camden, Oakland sparked a 7-0 run to take a 13-11 lead to start the game.

Doogan opened the second quarter with a layup to tie the game at 13, sparking an 8-0 run that built a 19-13 Spider lead. Richmond exploded offensively in the second quarter as Ullstrom drained seven three-pointers, sending Richmond into the locker room with a commanding 41-19 lead.

Oakland opened the third quarter with a layup, but Richmond answered with a dominating 16-0 run, extending the lead to 57-21. The Golden Grizzlies added eight points, while Ullstrom hit another three-pointer to send the Spiders into the final quarter leading 60-29.

Oakland found some offensive rhythm to open the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to 69-45 midway through the period. Ullstrom added a layup, and Sam Dewey closed out the game for Richmond with five points, sealing the 76-49 victory.

Notes on the Game

Rachel Ullstrom led the Spiders with a career-high 35 points on 12-of-16 shooting, including 11-of-15 from beyond the arc. Her 11 three-pointers set a new Richmond record, surpassing the previous mark of eight set by Rachael Bilney against George Washington on Jan. 11, 2012.
Ullstrom is the first Spider to score 35 or more points since Kate Flavin on Dec. 21, 2004, against Florida. She is also the first NCAA Division I player to hit 11 or more three-pointers since Sharn Hayward (Stonehill) on Jan. 15, 2024.
Maggie Doogan also scored in double figures, posting 16 points and lead the team with six rebounds alongside Katie Hill. Hill recorded a career-high seven assists, while Budnik and Doogan combined for four blocks.
The Spiders shot 29-of-64 (45.3%) from the field, 15-of-36 (41.7%) from three-point range, and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Richmond added 37 rebounds, 25 assists, nine blocks, and 11 steals while 45 of the Spider points came from three pointers.
Richmond now leads the all-time series with Oakland at 1-0 and recorded its first win over a Horizon League opponent dating back to the 2002-03 season.
The Spiders are now 7-0 to start the season, the team's best start since the 2004-05 season (10 straight).
