Richmond Claims Power 6 Win Over Undefeated Oklahoma State in Daytona Beach Classic Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Behind 22 points from Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond women's basketball team beat Oklahoma State, 57-53, on Saturday night in the final game of the Daytona Beach Classic. With the win, Richmond picks up its first Power 6 win since Nov. 28, 2021, improves to a perfect 8-0 on the season—its best start since the 2004-05 campaign—and hands the Cowgirls (7-1) their first loss of the season.

How it Happened
Oklahoma State opened the game with a pair of jumpers before Doogan got the Spiders on the board with a three-pointer. Anna Camden followed with another three-pointer for a 6-4 Richmond advantage. The Cowgirls then tied the game and retook the lead with four points before Doogan posted a layup to even the score at eight. Each team added two more points, and the first quarter ended in a 10-10 tie.
Budnik opened the second quarter with a three-pointer before Oklahoma State answered on the other end. The teams traded points before the Cowgirls went on an 8-0 run for a 21-15 lead. Ullstrom brought the Spiders back within three at 21-18 with a three-pointer and gave Richmond the lead, 22-21, with a layup after a score by Newell. Oklahoma State closed the half with a layup, sending Richmond into the locker room trailing by one, 23-22.
Two free throws from Katie Hill opened the third quarter, giving Richmond a 24-23 lead. Oklahoma State briefly went up by two after its own free throws before Doogan scored six straight points to give the Spiders a 30-25 lead. After a lone three-pointer by Oklahoma State, Doogan and Ullstrom combined for five points to push the lead to 35-28. Doogan added another layup as the Spiders entered the fourth quarter leading 37-32.
Out of the break, the Cowgirls clawed back to 42-41. Budnik responded with a three-pointer to extend the lead to 45-41, but Oklahoma State answered with a three-pointer to reclaim the lead at 47-46. Budnik put the Spiders back in front with another three-pointer, sparking a 7-2 run for a 53-49 advantage. Four free throws from Hill and Sweeney sealed the Spiders' 57-53 victory as the Cowgirls managed just one more three-pointer down the stretch.

- The Spiders evened the series against Oklahoma State at 1-1 and picked up the program's first win over a Big 12 opponent dating back to 2002-03.
- Richmond was paced by Doogan, who finished with 22 points, and Budnik, who added 11. Both players also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the team.
- Richmond shot 20 of 53 (37.7%) from the floor, 8 of 27 (29.6%) from three-point range, and 9 of 13 (69.2%) from the free-throw line. The Spiders also recorded 38 rebounds, 12 assists, two blocks, three steals, and 14 points off 13 Oklahoma State turnovers.
- This was Richmond's first Power 6 win since defeating Virginia on Nov. 28, 2021, 74-65.
