Spiders Fall to Georgetown on Last-Second Triple

RICHMOND, Va. – With one second on the clock, Georgetown made a tough three-pointer to hand the University of Richmond women's basketball team its first loss of the season Wednesday night at the Robins Center, 55-53. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 8-1 on the season while the Hoyas improved to 5-3.

How it Happened
Katie Hill opened the scoring for Richmond with a layup before Georgetown responded on the other end. After the teams tied the game at 5, Addie Budnik posted a layup after a Georgetown three-pointer to give the Spiders an 8-7 lead. The Hoyas were able to take the lead after two made free throws, 10-9, but a three-pointer from Maggie Doogan and a jumper from Ally Sweeney gave Richmond a 14-10 lead through the first quarter.
Richmond burst to an eight-point lead as Sweeney and Doogan combined for four points. The Hoyas then whittled the lead down to one, 18-17, but layups from Budnik and Sam Dewey and two free throws from Doogan sent the Spiders into the locker room with a 24-17 advantage.
The two teams exchanged points to open the third quarter before Rachel Ullstrom and Doogan built a 10-point lead, 32-22, off three made buckets. The Hoyas were able to cut the lead to 32-31 and take the lead off six straight points, 37-32, heading into the final quarter.
The Spiders managed to retake the lead at 38-37 to open the fourth quarter as Doogan recorded two layups and Ullstrom made two free throws. The Spiders exchanged a few points with the opposition before a 6-0 run for Georgetown gave the visiting team a 48-42 advantage. A layup from Budnik and a three-pointer from Sweeney cut the deficit to one, 48-47, but Richmond was unable to regain the lead until Budnik scored a layup with three seconds left for a 53-52 Spider lead. After a Georgetown timeout, the Hoyas were able to get a shot off with one second left to take the game, 55-53.
