
Doogan and Ullstrom Lead Spiders to Victory in High-Scoring Battle Versus Columbia

HENRICO, Va. — Led by Maggie Doogan's 21 points and Rachel Ullstrom's 20, the University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated Columbia, 85-76, on Sunday afternoon at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. With the win, Richmond improved to 9-1 on the season, while the Lions fell to 7-4.

How it Happened
Katie Hill opened the scoring for Richmond with a layup, followed by Doogan adding one of her own for an early 4-0 lead. After Columbia scored a layup and two free throws, Doogan and Addie Budnik combined for five points to push Richmond's lead to 9-4. Columbia answered with a basket, but Budnik scored five straight points to extend the lead to 14-6. Ullstrom then hit her first three-pointer of the game after a Columbia basket, giving Richmond a 17-9 advantage. Substitutions brought Ally Sweeney into the mix, who scored a layup, followed by Anna Camden's first points, to extend the lead to 22-12. Richmond ended the quarter strong with a layup from Sweeney and a three-pointer by Budnik, taking a 27-20 lead into the second quarter.
Columbia chipped away at the Richmond lead, cutting it to 28-27 as Doogan managed just one free throw in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Hill ended the scoring drought with a layup, and Doogan followed up with a three-pointer and a layup to extend the lead to 35-27. The teams exchanged points for much of the quarter, with Columbia clawing back to 41-38 before Hill hit a jumper at the buzzer, sending Richmond into the locker room with a 43-38 advantage.
Out of the break, Columbia came within one, 43-42, but two treys from Ullstrom and Budnik kept the Spiders ahead, 48-42. After the Spiders rebuilt the lead to eight 53-45, Columbia again brought the game within one, 53-52 from a layup. The two teams exchanged points throughout the quarter as a final layup from Sweeney sent UR into the final 10 minutes with a 60-56 lead.
Doogan opened the final 10 minutes with a layup and a triple to hand the Spiders a 65-58 lead before a triple from the Lions kept Columbia within striking distance, 65-61. Doogan then sparked a 10-0 run for the Spiders with efforts from Hill and Ullstrom for a 75-61 UR lead. After a triple from the Lions, Sweeney responded with a trey of her own for a 78-64 advantage. The Lions were able to chip away at the lead and brough the score back to nine, 83-74, but Doogan pushed the lead back to 85-74. Columbia managed one last bucket before time expired, but Richmond secured the 85-76 victory.

- Richmond's starting five delivered an offensive showcase. Maggie Doogan led all scorers with 21 points and added seven rebounds. Addie Budnik contributed 16 points, including four three-pointers, and matched a career-high seven assists. Ally Sweeney recorded a career-high seven assists and added 11 points, while Rachel Ullstrom scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Katie Hill chipped in 10 points. All five starters scored in double figures.
- Richmond shot 34 of 52 (65.4%) from the field and 12 of 18 (66.7%) from three-point range, while holding Columbia to 42.9% shooting.
- The Spiders also forced 12 Columbia turnovers, converting them into 16 points and added 25 rebounds, 25 assists, three blocks and two thefts.
- Richmond now leads the all-time series against Columbia, 2-1.
- The Spiders recorded their highest shooting percentage of the season, surpassing their 59.3% mark against Morgan State earlier this year.
