Buies Creek, NC. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse program opened their 2024 season with a 14-11 road victory over Campbell on Saturday. Through a series of five meetings, the Spiders remain undefeated against the Fighting Camels.
Richmond came out strong in the first quarter, holding Campbell to a 3-1 score heading into the second. Through quarters two and three, the Spiders outpaced the Camels 8-6, increasing the advantage to 11-7 before the fourth quarter. Campbell pieced together a solid final quarter scoring four goals to Richmond's three. The fourth quarter efforts weren't enough for Campbell as the Spiders finished their season opener with a 14-11 win.
Colleen Quinn led the Richmond offensive unit Saturday with 5 points coming from 4 goals and 1 assist. Only taking six shots, Quinn wrapped her day up with a .666 shooting percentage. She found success at the free position as well, going 2-2 on the opportunities created by Campbell penalties. Quinn is Richmond's top returning scorer from the 2023 season as she ended her sophomore campaign with 86 points from 58 goals and 28 assists. The 2024 team captain looks to lead the Richmond offense to success through the year as the Spiders will face a variety of top-class opponents through their schedule.
Sophomore Alexis Morton has been patient for her opportunity to be a minute's leader for the program, as she did not disappoint in her 2024 starting debut. Morton pestered the Campbell defense claiming 5 points on the day from 2 goals and 3 assists, tying her single game goal best and setting her new single game assist best. She was an asset on all levels for the Spiders, even forcing a Campbell turnover. The 2022 Inside Lacrosse Power 100 freshman looks to continue this season as an unstoppable force for the Richmond offensive unit.
Ali Susskind stepped up to the plate for the Spiders, collecting the hat trick with 3 goals on the afternoon. Susskind's shooting percentage rounded out to .500 on the day. She went 1-1 at the free possession, elaborating on the Richmond advantage.
