Spider Baseball Drops Season Opener to Niagara
02/16/2024 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team fell to the Niagara Purple Eagles, 6-0, at Pitt Field Friday to open the 2024 season. The squads will face off for two games tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. at Pitt Field.
"Kyle threw well for us today," Head Coach Mik Aoki said. "Unfortunately, it was just one of those baseball games. We had guys on base and Niagara's starter found a way to get outs when he needed them."
Rookies Jackson Kraemer and Jack Arcamone picked up doubles for their first collegiate hits, in the first and fourth innings respectively.
Richmond threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with walks by Jake Topolski and DJ Pacheco bookending Arcamone's double with one out. Niagara wiggled out of the jam with a sharp grounder to go home to third double play.
The Spiders got two runners on in the seventh in scoring position and in the eighth, but couldn't get them in. Pacheco and Topolski both got base hits while Jake Elbeery legged out a double.
UR starter Kyle Roche (0-1) worked around two runs, one earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts over seven innings of work in his Spider debut.
Esteban Rodriguez tossed two innings in relief allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
