02/20/2024 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond starter Esteban Rodriguez struck out nine William & Mary batters, allowing only one run over five innings in his first start of the season, but the Tribe found a way to hand a 10-1 loss to the Spiders Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field.
The Spiders (0-5) return to action at Pitt Field Friday to open a three-game weekend series against Mount St. Mary's. First pitch is set for 1:30 PM Friday.
Rodriguez picked up two strikeouts in four of his five innings on the mound, while scattering two hits, two walks and a hit batter and allowing one run in the third.
Richmond tied it up in the fifth 1-1. With the bases loaded, Jake Elbeery's hard hit forced the Tribe shortstop to bobble the ball up the middle, allowing Chase Conklin to score from third.
Jason Shockley, Jack Arcamone and Connor Larson picked up the Spiders three hits.
The Tribe (3-1) got to Spider reliever Harrison Clifton (0-1) in the sixth, breaking the tie with a two-run home run. Clifton tossed one and a third of an inning of work, allowing three runs on four hits and a strikeout. Cole Hentschel got the final two outs of the seventh, but allowed three runs to score on two hits, two walks and a strikeout. Matthew Anderson was on the hill for the Spiders for the final two innings, scattering three runs on four hits.
