CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Richmond Spiders ended the RiverTowne Invitational Tuesday just how they started it on Monday: atop the leaderboard.
After matching the program record for lowest single-round score with a 5-under 283 in Round 1, the Spiders stayed in first with back-to-back scores of 293 (+5) in Rounds 2 and 3 to finish the event at 5-over par (869), the best tournament score in program history. Richmond finished three shots in front of runner-up Coastal Carolina for its first tournament win since last year's Patriot League Championship and their first in an event with 15 or more teams since the Bill Berg Invitational in October 2017.
"It was great to see team sleep on a lead and finish on top," said coach Calle Barlow. "The only way for us to win is to put ourselves in that position and learn how to do it! I'm extremely proud of them and I can't wait to get back to work for the rest of the spring."
The Spiders smashed the program record for lowest tournament score, knocking five strokes off their 10-over total at last year's Patriot League Championship. Richmond's 5-under 283 in Round 1 matched its final round score in last October's UNGC Fall Invitational for the lowest 18-hole score in Spiders history.
All five Spiders golfers finished in the top 25 in the 81-golfer field. Senior Rory Weinfurther led the Spiders with a career-low 2-under par (214), tying for fourth. Weinfurther's score is tied for the fourth best tournament score in program history and led to her ninth career top-five finish.
"On the back nine today I struggled a bit but I just kept telling myself that it's okay and to keep staying patient and consistent," said Weinfurther. "I was also just reminding myself to slow down and enjoy the rest of the way in because I knew we were doing well, it was all about remembering my swing and sticking to it with confidence."
Junior Lauren Jones tied for seventh at 1-under, a career-low score and also one of the 10 lowest tournament scores in program history. Jones started the event with a 3-under 69 in Round 1, matching the eighth-best round ever by a Spider.
Freshman Maya Beasley and sophomore Olivia Wilkie both tied for 19th at 6-over par (222). It was Beasley's third top-20 finish this season, and Wilkie's first since playing third at last year's Patriot League Championship.
Sophomore Hannah Lydic was one shot back at 7-over par, 23rd in the field. Lydic has now finished in the top 25 in all six of her events this season.
Just a year ago, Richmond placed 15th out of 19 teams in the RiverTowne Invitational at 40-over par (904). Tuesday's win was the 14th tournament title in program history.
Richmond will return to South Carolina on March 15-17 to compete in the Low Country Intercollegiate at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head.
