Women’s Basketball Reaches 1,000 Program Wins, Remains Undefeated at Home with Victory over Fordham

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind 18 points from Rachel Ullstrom, and 16 points from Grace Townsend, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team weathered a second-quarter comeback-bid from Fordham and picked up a 79-60 win over the Rams inside the Robins Center Saturday night. With the win, the Spiders improved to 19-4 overall and 9-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference action while Fordham fell to 7-15 overall and 2-9 in conference play. In addition, the Spiders pushed their home win-streak to 17-straight games, dating back to 2022-23, good for sixth-longest of NCAA DI teams.

How it Happened
Addie Budnik opened the scoring for Richmond with a layup before Maggie Doogan followed the play with a triple for an early 5-0 Spider lead. Siobhan Ryan and Katie Hill then combined for four points to push the lead to 9-2 in favor of Richmond. After a trey from the opposition, Ryan responded on the other coast with a triple of her own to preserve the Spider lead, 12-5. The Rams then scratched back to come within two, 14-12, but an 11-0 run from the Spiders sparked by a triple from Budnik allowed the Spiders to build a 13-point lead, 25-12. Faye Parker would get her first points off since 11/30/23 against Villanova to end the first quarter with Richmond ahead, 27-15.
Both teams exchanged points to open the second 10 minutes before an 11-0 run from the Rams tied the game at 31. Townsend netted a layup to end the scoring drought for Richmond as Fordham held the Spiders to only six points heading into halftime.
Out of the break, Fordham took the lead off a pair of free throws and a layup, before free throws from Budnik and Townsend gave the Spiders back the lead, 36-35. Ryan and Doogan then combined for four points to give Richmond a 40-37 lead. After exchanging more points on each end, a trey from Townsend, combined with a pair of free throws by Doogan, put the Spiders ahead 47-41 with 4:14 left in the quarter. Following more free throws between both teams, Ullstrom posted back-to-back triples to send UR into the final 10 minutes ahead 57-47.
Townsend began the scoring for Richmond in the fourth quarter with a trey, after a quick layup from Fordham for a 60-49 UR lead. Ryan then followed the play with a triple of her own for a 63-49 lead. Ullstrom again netted a trey from deep to give the Spiders a 15-point lead, 68-53, before back-to-back layups from FOR cut the Spider lead back down to 68-57. Ullstrom then sparked a 9-0 run for the Spiders courtesy of efforts by Townsend, Parker and Kylee Lewandowski for a 77-57 UR lead. Fordham would get one final trey off before Ally Sweeney posted a jumper courtesy of Courtney Swider to hand Richmond the game, 79-60.
