Richmond Shoots Lights-Out from Deep, Posts First win in Kingston Since 2017

KINGSTON, R.I. – Shooting 52.4% from beyond the arc, and netting four-straight triples to open the game, the University of Richmond women's basketball team posted a 68-49 win at Rhode Island Wednesday evening. The Spiders posted their second win this season against the Rams, the team's first win in Kingston since 2017, and improved to 20-4 overall and 10-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Rams fell to 15-10 overall and 7-5 in conference.

How it Happened
The Spiders fired on all cylinders to open the game as Addie Budnik, Maggie Doogan, Katie Hill and Rachel Ullstrom posted 14 points for a 14-2 UR lead. The Spiders went 4-4 from beyond the arc to open the game. After the opposition finally ended the scoring drought from a layup, Siobhan Ryan kept the offensive fire power going as she posted a triple of her own for a 17-4 Richmond lead. Ullstrom followed the play with a layup before Doogan netted it from deep. Two free throws from URI ended the first quarter with Richmond ahead, 22-7.
Rhode Island finally found its offensive footing, as the Rams opened the second 10 minutes with a 9-0 run to cut the UR lead to 22-16. Doogan ended the scoring drought for UR with two layups before Hill posted a layup and a mid-range jump shot to lift the Spiders to 30-16. Following a hoop-and-harm from URI, Ryan posted another triple for a 33-19 UR lead with 1:57 left in the half. Melissa Mwanza, with her first points since 12/16/23, posted a lone free throw to send Richmond into the locker room with an 11-point lead, 34-23.
The teams exchanged buckets on each coast to open the third quarter, with Richmond holding a steady lead, 41-31. After a pair of free throws from Townsend and Budnik, Laren VanArsdale posted a layup to push the Richmond lead to 47-31. Ullstrom then posted a triple for a 50-34 advantage for UR. Budnik and Ullstrom would then combine for four points to have the Spiders sitting comfortably heading into the final quarter, 54-34.
Townsend opened the final frame with a layup before the teams posted two free throws each for a 58-36 UR lead. After exchanging a few more points, Townsend and Ryan combined for five points to keep the Spiders ahead by 22, 65-43. The Rams chipped away at the deficit and cut the UR lead to 65-49, but a triple from Townsend allowed the Spiders to take the game 68-49.
