Richmond Drops First Loss of Season to No. 17 Navy

Annapolis, Md. – The No. 20 nationally ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse program dropped its first loss of the season to No. 17 Navy Saturday evening at 14-5, putting the all-time series record at 3-0 in favor of the Midshipmen.
The Spiders were unable to match the intensity of the Mids through the matchup as Navy held a continuous lead. First quarter play ended in a 5-1 Navy lead as four different Mids found the back of the net. Richmond climbed back through the second quarter, narrowing the margin to 7-4 with three goals heading into halftime. Navy came out stronger through quarters three and four, scoring seven more goals and this time holding Richmond to only one, pushing the final score to 14-5.
Juliana Stanley represented Richmond strongly on the offensive side of the ball, turning a few creative shots into 2 goals.
Ali Susskind, Colleen Quinn and Maggie Jordan each accounted for individual goals on the evening.
Becca Sturtz and Caroline Murphy stood out as defensive leaders for the Spiders. Murphy ended her day with 5 ground balls and 1 caused turnover. Sturtz forced 3 caused turnovers and scooped 2 ground balls.
Nicole Burney and Abby Francioli both saw action in the cage. Burney played through the first quarter, netting 5 saves. Francioli played through quarters two to four, grabbing 7 saves.
Up next, Richmond will make the short trip to Charlottesville on Wednesday, March 6 to face currently ranked No. 14/15 Virginia at 5:00 p.m.
