Richmond Downed by No. 13 Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 23 nationally ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse program dropped its second loss of the season to No. 13/15 Virginia Wednesday evening at 20-5, putting the all-time series record at 22-3 in favor of the Cavaliers.
Richmond opened the game with strong efforts, as Maggie Jordan scored the first goal of the competition, setting the Spiders only lead of the game to 1-0. Virginia stepped up after the Jordan score, leading Richmond 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. Quarters two and three were dominated by the Cavaliers as they scored 12 goals, shutting out the Spiders and pushing the score to 17-2 heading into the final quarter. Despite Richmond's fight through the fourth quarter, tying the period 3-3 with Virginia, the win went to the Cavaliers with a final score of 20-5.
Maggie Jordan and Leah Kenny each contributed with 2 goals. Jordan shot for 100% and led defensive efforts with 1 ground ball, 1 caused turnover and 3 draw controls.
Ali Susskind scored a lone goal on the evening with a creative shot in the open field.
Freshman Mia Valerio led the Richmond defense in ground balls, scooping 2 against Virginia.
Up next, the Spiders have a quick turnaround as they open conference play on Saturday, March 9 on the road against Duquesne. Opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
