Spider Baseball Falls to No. 9 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Richmond baseball fell to No. 9 Virginia 15-5 Tuesday at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park in midweek action.
Richmond, now 9-15 on the season, will open Atlantic 10 Conference action against George Mason at Pitt Field Friday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
Jake Topolski got the Spiders on the board in the first inning with a grand slam to left center, bringing in DJ Pacheco, Phil Bernstein and Jordan Jaffe to score. The home run was Topolski's fifth home run and second grand slam of the season.
UVA answered with three in the second off UR starter Logan Ymker. Ymker scattered five hits, one walk and two strike outs in two innings of work.
The Spiders got another run in the fourth inning as Pacheco doubled in Connor Larson from second who drew a walk and stole a base.
Vincent Corso allowed one run on a walk and a hit batter that tied the game at 4-all, getting the first two outs of the third. Davis Wallon took the loss and was tagged with two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batter, getting the final out of the third and the first out of the fourth.
Dane Armson took over for Wallon in the fourth, allowing a three-run home run for a UVA 7-5 lead through four innings. Armson tossed a scoreless fifth, to finish his inning and two-thirds of work allowing two hits.
Harrison Clifton took the mound in the sixth, allowing two runs on one hit, two walks and collected a strike out in his 14th appearance of the season.
Jackson Kraemer and Cole Hentschel combined for the seventh. Kraemer allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits while Hentschel got the final out via fly out. Ethan Sannes and Jake Young worked the eighth. Sannes allowed four runs on four hits and got the first two outs of the frame. Young walked one and collected his first collegiate strikeout.
