High Point, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team went on the road and defeated rival High Point Saturday night, 9-5.
Richmond's defense held High Point to a season-low five goals and Atlantic 10 leading scorer and defending Offensive Player of the Week, Brayden Mayea, was held to just one.
High Point put the first two points on the board, picking up two quick scores within the game's first two minutes.
Down two, Richmond (8-4) unleashed six unanswered goals to carry a 6-2 lead into the half. Aidan O'Neil notched the Spiders first tally at 9:23 in the first quarter before Richmond blanked the Panthers (7-6) in the second. Gavin Creo scored off a feed from Dalton Young, Max Merklinger connected on a pass from Joe Sheridan, Charlie Packard picked up an unassisted goal and Young scored his second, this one off a pass from Jack Pilling.
Pilling, a short stick defensive midfielder, led the Spiders defense with a career-high five caused turnovers, which ties for eighth for a single game in the program record book. Behind Pilling and the rest of the Richmond defensive unit, goalie Zach Vigue recorded 12 saves.
Richmond and High Point traded an even three goals apiece during the second half, but Richmond's explosive scoring run would prove enough to pull off the win and move to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
Creo took a late hit as he battled defenders for his second goal of the game, Merklinger added his second tally, then High Point added its last two goals before Madonna picked up the final Spiders goal.
Richmond looks to stay undefeated in conference play when it travels to UMass next weekend, April 20. Face off is set for noon at Garber Field.
