Spiders Remain Undefeated in Conference With 14-12 Win at UMass Saturday

Amherst, Mass. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team went on the road and remained undefeated at 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play, taking down UMass, 14-12, at Garber Field Saturday. The Spiders will meet Saint Joseph's at Robins Stadium next Saturday, April 27 to vie for the league's regular season title.
Richmond (9-4, 4-0) scored 42 seconds into the game then added another at 11:39 to take an early 2-0 lead. The Minutemen (6-6, 2-2) responded with their first of the day at 6:41 before Richmond tacked on two more to take a 4-1 advantage into the second frame.
From there, the momentum shifted in favor of UMass who would outscore the Spiders 6-1 in the second quarter.
Down two coming out of the half, the momentum shifted once again and Richmond unleashed six unanswered goals in less than six minutes to go up 11-8. UMass broke the Spiders scoring streak with a goal at 6:42, then Richmond scored it's last of the third at 5:49.
UMass put together a late comeback effort, outscoring Richmond 4-2 in the final quarter including three goals in the game's final 2:13, but it wouldn't be enough as the Spiders explosive third quarter lifted them to its second conference road win in as many weeks.
Aidan O'Neil and Lance Madonna both recorded hat tricks while Dalton Young, Luke Grayum and Lukas Olsson chipped in two apiece. Young ran away as Richmond's points leader on the day, chipping in four assists as well. Gavin Creo and Joe Sheridan added a tally each, and Charlie Packard and Jared Chenoy recorded assists.
Stats were nearly even in the two-goal game. UMass held a one-shot advantage at 40-39, and Richmond held the 38-32 upper hand in ground balls. Richmond went 15-29 at the face off dot and UMass was 14-29. Richmond turned the ball over 15 times and caused nine Minutemen turnovers, while UMass committed 14 turnovers and caused eight of Richmond's.
Zach Vigue made 13 saves in cage and Jared Chenoy went 15-27 at the face off dot.
The Spiders and Hawks will meet to decide the Atlantic 10's regular season champion next Saturday, April 27 when Richmond returns home for its final contest of the season at Robins Stadium. Game time is set for 4:00.
