GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team closed the Ironwood Invitational with a round of 13-over par (301) Tuesday to move three spots up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place at the 15-team event. The Spiders carded six birdies and nothing worse than a bogey on the back nine after combining for three birdies and three double bogeys or worse on the front nine. Sophomore Hannah Lydic led the late Richmond rally, playing her final six holes in 3-under par to finish the event at 7-over, tied for ninth place.
"[Coach Calle Barlow] was able to keep me patient and calm so that I could 'get out of my own way' if you will," said Lydic of her strong finish. "After the first few holes I knew I had to turn things around and to do that I had to let go of the things I couldn't control and Coach Calle was a big help in that."
Lydic played the par 5s at Ironwood Golf & Country Club in 2-under par during the event, tied for fourth best in the field, as she recorded her sixth top-10 finish this season.
Sophomore Olivia Wilkie tied for 22nd at 227 (+11), her fourth top-25 showing in four events this spring.
Senior Rory Weinfurther used a final-round 74 (+2) to move 14 spots up the individual leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 35th place at 14-over par (230).
Junior Lauren Jones carded a second straight 79 (+7) Tuesday and placed 54th at 18-over par (234), four shots in front of freshman Heather Appelson, who shot a season-best 76 (+4) Tuesday to finish in 67th place.
Junior Christine Mandile competed as an individual and tied for 76th at 27-over par (243).
Richmond had been seeking its third straight top-two team finish after winning the RiverTowne Invitational in February and placing second at the Low Country Intercollegiate in March. The Ironwood Invitational was UR's final tournament before the Patriot League Championship at Bucknell later this month.
"I saw some resilience. The conditions were tough, and even when we were not playing great we stuck with it," said coach Calle Barlow. "This showed me what we need to improve for conference but that we can score ok even when we're not at our best."
