
Spiders Fall to Rams in First Conference Loss of Season

Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse program dropped its Saturday afternoon matchup against VCU 9-7. This is the Spiders first loss in program history to the Rams as the all-time series record moves to 8-1.
Richmond scored the first goal of the day but was not able to gain much momentum after the opening score. VCU went on to score four unanswered goals, putting the first quarter tally at 4-1 in favor of the Rams. Richmond fought back through the second quarter, outscoring VCU 4-2 and narrowing the deficit to 6-5 heading into the third quarter. Gritty play in quarter three led to a tied period of 2-2 as the Rams held onto their thin margin at 8-7. The Spiders were unable to fight through the VCU defense in the final fifteen minutes of action, losing the quarter 1-0 and leaving the final score at 9-7.
Despite the loss, Sarah Roycroft found success on both offensive and defensive ends of the field. Roycroft shot for 100% with two goals on the day. Her defensive efforts led to an impressive 5 caused turnovers, 4 ground balls and 2 draw controls.
