Four Spiders Earn Postseason Honors; Whitley Named Defensive Player of the Year

TYSONS, Va. – Four University of Richmond baseball student-athletes collected Atlantic 10 Conference postseason baseball honors, the league announced prior to the start of the second day of the conference tournament Wednesday.
Aaron Whitley was named Defensive Player of the Year, while Esteban Rodriguez collected All-A-10 Second Team honors. Jackson Hinchliffe was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team and Phil Bernstein collected All-Academic Team accolades.
Whitley, a graduate student from Niskayuna, N.Y., paced the team with a .381 average in 37 games in centerfield during the regular season. He is 16 of 17 in stolen bases, while leading the team with nine home runs and 44 runs scored and is second with 11 doubles. Among the A-10, Whitley ranks second in average and third in OPS (1.140) and slugging percentage (.655). He also ranks in the top-10 in runs, home runs and stolen bases. During the regular season Whitley had 15 multi-hit games, including four with three hits and two with four hits. In the outfield, Whitley did not commit an error and collected one assist while making 98 putouts in 99 chances.
Rodriguez, a junior from Doral, Fla., made 10 starts in 15 appearances with a 4-2 record. He struck out 81 over 68.0 innings pitched putting together a 4.76 ERA. Rodriguez struck out nine batters in three different outings, against William & Mary, Mount St. Mary's and Davidson. Against A-10 opponents George Washington and Rhode Island he struck out eight, which were two of his four victories on the season. Among the A-10, Rodriguez ranks in top 10 in innings pitched, third in strikeouts and fourth in batters struck out looking (22).
Hinchliffe, a freshman from Fair Haven, N.J., made 11 appearances with three starts this season. He put together a 1-1 record, collecting his first collegiate victory against Davidson in relief. Hinchliffe tossed 30.2 innings for a 3.82 ERA with 17 strikeouts. He collected a season-high four strikeouts against St. Bonaventure and tossed a season-high 4.1 innings at Rhode Island. Hinchliffe pitched 7.2 innings before allowing an earned run (vs ODU, High Point, George Mason and Longwood).
Bernstein, a graduate student from Brooklyn, N.Y., started in 52 of 54 games for UR at the top of the lineup and in the outfield. He leads team in hits (65), doubles (16), and walks (28) while he sits second on the team in avg (.319), RBI (40) and stolen bases (7). Bernstein tallied seven multi-RBI games, including a game each with three (vs. Mount St. Mary's), four (vs. Mount St. Mary's) and five (vs Princeton) RBI. He led the team with a 26-game reached base streak to start the season which was snapped March 31.
