09/20/2024 | Field Hockey
ST. LOUIS – Sophomore Avery Russell tipped in two goals in the second quarter to spur the Richmond field hockey team past Saint Louis, 3-1, in the squad's Atlantic 10 Conference opener Friday afternoon at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
With the victory, Richmond moves to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in league action. UR is back in action at Crenshaw Field, Friday, September 27 to host conference foe Davidson at 5 p.m. on ESPN-plus.
Russell's first goal in the 18th minute of the second quarter was a tip-in off Margaret Scheurer's shot just inside the circle after she drove the ball into the attacking third of the field. Schuerer collected her first collegiate point with the assist on Russell's third goal of the year.
Saint Louis responded with quickly, putting in a goal just under a minute after Richmond broke the scoreless tie.
On the Spiders third penalty corner of the game and first of the second quarter, Valen Luna Paratore stuffed in her fourth goal of the season. After she inserted the ball on the corner, Grace Wiggins and Jess McMeeking both took shots that were stopped by the SLU defense. Alexa Derr, for her first assist of the season, got a quick touch to push the ball to Luna Paratore for the goal in the 28th minute of the first half.
UR pushed the lead to two just 46 seconds later, after Clara Larripa gained possession of the ball. She took the ball into the circle before sending a shot towards the goal which Russell redirected for her second goal of game and fourth of the season. With the helper, Larripa paces the Spiders with 17 points on seven goals and three assists.
Richmond finished the contest with 13 shots, including eight on goal, and seven corners. UR goalkeeper Kristen Rake made three saves, while guiding the defense to hold SLU to just six shots with four on goal and two corners. Rake has 43 saves on the season in six starts between the pipes for the Spiders.
