Wiggins, Luna Paratore Score Twice in Spider Hockey OT Win Over Davidson

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond Field Hockey's Grace Wiggins powered the game-winning goal past the Davidson goalkeeper to give the Spiders a 5-4 victory Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Wiggins' goal, assisted by Jess McMeeking, 1:30 into overtime moves the Spiders to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference action. UR will host Towson Sunday for an 11 a.m. contest at Crenshaw Field and streamed on ESPN-Plus.
For her first goal of the season and first for the Spiders, Wiggins scored on a corner play in the second minute of the game. Clara Larripa sent the ball in to McMeeking for the stop and set up for Wiggins.
Davidson answered quickly in the sixth minute, putting in a rebounded shot off UR goalkeeper Kristen Rake's leg pads. Rake had three of her seven saves in the first quarter.
Valen Luna Paratore gave the Spiders the 2-1 lead in the 19th minute of the second quarter with a back hand shot into the upper corner of the cage. Lainey Nichols ran down the ball nearly to the corner and sent the ball into Luna Paratore for the score.
Davidson took a 3-2 lead into the half after scoring in the 23rd and 28th minutes of action. At the half, the Wildcats held the upper hand in shots 12-4 and corners 4-3.
UR had four shots and three corners in the third quarter but was still down a goal until the 51st minute when Nichols scored on a corner play. Larripa again sent in the ball to Fraya MacKay for the stop for Nichols' first goal of the season and seventh different goal scorer for UR this season.
Davidson regained a 4-3 lead 22 seconds later. UR pulled Rake for an extra offensive player for two minutes, in which Davidson earned three straight corners but were held from scoring.
Luna Paratore tied the game with 49 seconds left in regulation as the Spiders flipped the field. Wiggins corralled a pass from McMeeking in the middle of the field and pushed it up to Luna Paratore in the circle.
