Spiders Edged by Fordham in A-10 Nail-Biter

BRONX, N.Y. – In a game that saw 12 lead changes and eight ties, the University of Richmond women's basketball team dropped its first Atlantic 10 Conference game of the season, 80-78, Thursday afternoon on the road. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 10-5 on the season while the Rams improved to 7-6 overall. Both teams moved to 1-1 in the A-10.

How it Happened
Fordham opened the game with a layup before Maggie Doogan responded on the other end with a layup of her own to tie the game at two. The two teams tied the game two more times courtesy of Rachel Ullstrom and Addie Budnik for a 6-6 scoreline. Richmond took its first lead of the game off two made free throws from Ullstrom while Budnik followed with a trey for an 11-6 Spider lead. After a layup from the opposition, Sweeney posted a triple for a 14-8 UR lead. The Rams then scratched back and tied the game at 14 and retook the lead with a layup. Budnik tied the game again at 16 with a layup, but Fordham was able to take a lead into the second quarter with another easy two points, 18-16.
Sweeney opened the second quarter with a layup that sparked a 6-0 run for Richmond to pull ahead 22-18. Fordham posted its first points of the quarter at the 7:25 mark, but Doogan and Ullstrom capitalized from deep to give UR a 28-20 lead. The Rams ended their scoring drought with a triple, but Ullstrom responded on the other end with a trey of her own for a 31-23 Spider lead. After a 4-0 spurt from Fordham, Sam Dewey recorded her first points of the game with a layup for a 33-27 lead. The Rams whittled away at the deficit, going on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 33. After exchanging points, Ullstrom ended the half with a layup to send UR into the locker room with a 40-37 lead. The half saw seven tied scores.
Fordham opened the third quarter with a layup to come within one, 40-39, but Doogan responded two minutes later with two points of her own for a 42-39 advantage. After two points from the Rams, Hill completed the hoop-and-harm and another layup to give the Spiders a 47-41 lead. The Rams then responded with five unanswered points to come within one, but Doogan preserved the lead with a layup, 49-46. After a 7-0 run from Fordham, the Rams took the lead at 53-49. Sweeney again brought the game within one with a triple and gave the Spiders back the lead at 54-53 with two free throws. The two teams each posted layups to end the third quarter with the Spiders leading by one, 56-55.
The two teams exchanged points to open the fourth quarter as the lead changed seven times in the opening minutes before Fordham posted a triple for a 64-62 lead. The Rams then followed the play with a jumper to push the lead to 66-62. Doogan put the Spiders back into the scoring column with a triple, but the Rams responded on the other end with three points of their own. After an 8-0 run for Fordham, Budnik posted back-to-back free throws and a triple to cut the deficit to four, 74-70. After a lone layup from the Rams, Budnik posted five-straight points to bring the Spiders within one, 76-75, but the Rams capitalized on four free throws for an 80-75 advantage with 17 seconds left in the game. Budnik posted a triple with four seconds remaining to bring Richmond within two, 80-78, and attempted a final layup but couldn't find the final two points as the Spiders dropped their first conference game of the season.

- The Spiders were paced by Addie Budnik, who finished the game with 24 points in addition to five rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals.
- Rachel Ullstrom (19 pts), Maggie Doogan (14 pts), and Ally Sweeney (12 pts) also finished the game in double figures. Ullstrom finished the game with five rebounds and two assists, while Doogan finished with three boards and a team-high seven assists, and Sweeney finished with four boards and two assists.
- Budnik posted her 18th career game with 20 or more points and 95th game in double figures.
- Doogan posted her fifth career game with five or more assists.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 29 of 57 (50.9%) from the floor, 10 of 24 (41.7%) from deep and 10 of 13 (76.9%) from the free throw line. In addition, Richmond posted 25 rebounds, 21 assists, four blocks and seven thefts.
