WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Richmond Spiders struggled to find an answer to George Washington's inside size Wednesday on the road, as the Revolutionaries outrebounded the Spiders by 18 in a 75-66 win, their first in their last four games vs UR. The loss dropped the Spiders to 7-14 overall and 2-6 in the Atlantic 10.
GW's starting center Rafael Castro led all players with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Six of his rebounds came on the offensive end as the Revolutionaries scored 13 second-chance points, 13 more than the Spiders.
"Castro had a great game," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "That's the second consecutive center that had really kind of a career game. There has to be some pride and determination not to let that happen again."
GW totaled 39 rebounds to 21 for Richmond, UR's worst rebounding differential (-18) in an Atlantic 10 game this season.
Richmond was led by B. Artis White, who scored a season-high 17 points, and Mikkel Tyne, who added 13. White and Tyne combined to shoot 8-16 from three-point range as Richmond made a season-high 13 three-pointers, three more than in any other game this season.
"I definitely needed it for my confidence, for sure," said White. "I'm sick we didn't get the win, but it definitely is a step in the right direction for me."
"B. Artis certainly showed a little bit of the player we know he is," said Mooney. "Mikkel was aggressive, that was positive."
Redshirt freshman Ryan Soulis played a career-high 19 minutes at center and finished with four points, four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
"He reminds me a little bit of Grant [Golden] when he was a true freshman," said Mooney. "He has a really good sense and has good instincts and is competitive. … We felt like he was our best chance tonight in that position and I thought he really played well and earned more time and more looks for sure."
The Spiders outscored GW 12-8 in the game's first eight minutes, with all 12 points coming from three-point range. The Revs responded with seven straight points to take the lead, and held a slim 33-32 edge at halftime. Jason Roche led UR in the first half with 9 points on a trio of three-pointers.
GW turned a 37-36 deficit into a 45-39 lead with a 9-2 run early in the second half. The Revs would not relinquish the lead thereafter, pulling away for the victory to improve to 15-6 on the season and 4-4 in the Atlantic 10.
"We need everybody. That's where we are. We need guys to really just strive for consistency and get better," said Mooney.
Up next for the Spiders is a matchup with intracity rival VCU on Saturday at 4 PM on CBS Sports Network in the Richmond Area Honda Dealers Capital City Classic.
