Shields' Strike Not Enough as Spiders Drop Tough Match to VCU

RICHMOND, Va. — The University of Richmond women's soccer team got a first-half equalizer from senior Emma Shields to level the match at 1-1, but VCU converted late as the Spiders fell 2-1 Thursday night at Sports Backers Stadium. Richmond moved to 3-7-5 overall and 0-5-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while VCU improved to 6-8-2 on the season and 4-3-0 in league action.

How it Happened
VCU opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Ishpreen Marwah finished inside the box off a back-and-forth sequence. Richmond answered in the 27th minute as Shields pounced on a loose ball at the top of the box and buried her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The Spiders nearly went in front two minutes later when Marisa Snee rattled the crossbar from distance in the 30th minute, but Jess Moylan couldn't put away the rebound.
After halftime, keeper Veronica Rrapi kept it level with multiple stops, including saves on chances from Jackson in the 46th minute and Jessica Gotshall in the 65th. The Rams netted the winner in the 80th when Jensyn Lins finished a low service from Isabelle Franklin in the 80th minute for the 2-1 result.

Richmond returns home Sunday to host George Washington at President's Field at 3 p.m.
