No. 24 Spiders Drop Road Test at No. 4 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 24 Richmond battled throughout but fell 85–56 at No. 4 Texas Friday night at the Moody Center. The Spiders moved to 1–1 on the season, while the Longhorns improved to 2–0.

How It Happened
Texas opened with a free throw and a jumper for a quick 3–0 lead, but Tierra Simon got Richmond on the board with a layup that sparked an 6–0 run for a 6–3 advantage. Madison Booker ended the drought with six straight points to swing it back to 9–8 Texas. The Spiders kept pace as Ava Persichetti and Maggie Doogan combined for six points to build a 16–11 lead before the Longhorns scored the final two buckets of the quarter to make it 16–14 after one. Richmond also saw sophomotre guard Alicia Newell exit late in the first quarter due to injury and not return.
Texas seized momentum early in the second, using an 11–0 run to go up 27–16. Doogan stopped the stretch with an and-one conversion, then knocked down a three to trim the deficit to 32–22. Rachel Ullstrom added a late layup, but Texas sank a free throw in the closing seconds to send Richmond to halftime down 35–24.
The Longhorns came out fast again in the third, scoring six straight before Simon's jumper got the Spiders going. The teams traded threes, but an 8–2 Texas push stretched the margin to 54–32. Ullstrom hit from deep to end the drought, and Richmond added buckets from Ullstrom and Doogan late, though Texas carried a 66–43 lead into the fourth.
Doogan completed another three-point play early in the final quarter and Ullstrom followed with a layup to make it 69–51, but Texas responded with a 14–0 run to put the game out of reach. Doogan and Persichetti added the final Spider points as Texas closed out the 85–56 win.
