Late Push Falls Short as Richmond Drops A-10 Road Test at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team suffered its first Atlantic 10 Conference loss of the season Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 73-61 decision at Rhode Island behind 26 points and seven rebounds from Maggie Doogan. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Rams improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in A-10 action.

How it Happened
Rhode Island jumped out to a 7-0 start before a triple from Sam Dewey at the 7:26 mark gave the Spiders their first points. After another 4-0 spurt from the opposition, Ava Persichetti cut the deficit to six, 11-5, off a jumper. Ally Sweeney followed the play with a trey to come within three, 11-8, but two made free throws from the Rams pushed the Rhode Island lead back to five. After Maggie Doogan scored her first points of the game on a layup, URI immediately responded on the other end with five straight points to build an eight-point lead, 18-10. Sweeney closed the quarter with a triple to trim the deficit to five as Richmond trailed 18-13 after one.
URI again opened the quarter with a triple, as Doogan followed the play with an and-one to keep the deficit at five, 21-16. After exchanging a few points, Sweeney knocked down a triple to make it 25-21, but Rhode Island answered with a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 34-21, with 4:05 left in the frame. Rachel Ullstrom and Alicia Newell combined for five points to pull within eight before Rhode Island answered with a layup to maintain a 10-point cushion, 36-26. Doogan knocked down a late triple to send Richmond into the break trailing 36-29.
Two made free throws from URI opened the third quarter, as the Rams extended the lead to 10 following an additional layup, 39-29. Ullstrom ended the Spiders' two-minute scoring drought with a triple, followed by a layup to cut the deficit to six, 39-33. Doogan added two free throws to make it a four-point game, 39-35, with 5:26 remaining in the quarter. Rhode Island pushed the lead back to seven on a triple, but Newell answered with a layup to keep Richmond within five. After another URI layup, Doogan drilled a trey to bring the Spiders within four, 44-40, before Simon followed with a layup to cut the margin to two. Each team traded jumpers in the final minute, with URI taking a 46-44 edge into the fourth.
Rhode Island opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run before Simon ended the scoring drought for the Spiders with a layup to trail by five. The Rams then built a nine-point lead, outscoring Richmond 6-2 over the next stretch to go ahead 57-48 with 7:38 remaining. After two free throws from Doogan, four points from URI extended the lead to 11, 61-50. Doogan scored four straight points to pull Richmond within seven, 61-54, but Rhode Island answered with a triple. After the teams traded scores, the Rams connected on back-to-back treys to push the lead to 13, 72-59, before Newell connected on a layup to make it 72-61 with 1:05 on the clock. URI added a final free throw to seal the 73-61 victory.

Notes on the Game
- Maggie Doogan recorded her 33rd career game with 20 or more points, pacing the Spiders with 26 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Doogan and Tierra Simon each dished out three assists to lead the team.
- Richmond shot 22-of-55 (40 percent) from the floor, 10-of-32 (31.3 percent) from three and 7-of-10 (70 percent) at the free throw line. The Spiders finished with 35 rebounds, nine assists, six steals and two blocks, scoring 24 points in the paint and seven points off eight Rhode Island turnovers.
- Richmond suffered its first A-10 loss of the season and its first conference defeat since Jan. 2, 2025, at Fordham, moving the Spiders to 34-4 in league play over the past two seasons.
- The Rams snapped a four-game losing streak against Richmond.
