Balanced Attack Lifts Richmond Past Saint Joseph’s, Spiders Remain Atop A-10 at 12-1

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team clipped the visiting Saint Joseph's Hawks, 59-51, Thursday night inside the Robins Center. With the win, Richmond remains atop the Atlantic 10 Conference standings at 21-5 overall and 12-1 in conference play while SJU fell to 20-5 and 11-3 in the A-10. Richmond also picked up its fourth Quad 2 win of the season, moving to 4-0 in Quad 4 matchups with previous wins over Fairfield, Columbia and George Mason.

How it Happened
Katie Hill opened the scoring for the Spiders with a layup before Addie Budnik followed the play with a layup of her own for an early 4-0 Spider lead. Saint Joseph's got its first points of the quarter at the 8:15 mark with a triple to cut the lead to one, 4-3. Rachel Ullstrom then posted a trey before a Hawk layup while Budnik answered with a trey for a 9-5 UR lead. SJU then went on a 6-0 run to end the first quarter with an 11-9 advantage.
Hill again opened the second frame with back-to-back layups to retake the lead at 13-11, but the Hawks continued to score on the other end and tied the game at 13 with a layup which sparked a 6-0 run for the Hawks to push their lead to 17-13. Budnik got Richmond back on the scoring front with two made free throws, but the Hawks managed to rebuild the lead to five, 20-15, with a triple with 4:18 left in the half. The Spiders held SJU scoreless the remainder of the quarter as Faith Alston sparked an 11-0 run with efforts courtesy of Doogan, Hill, Budnik and Sweeney to head into the locker room with a 26-20 lead.
SJU opened the third quarter with a layup to cut the lead to 26-22 before a triple from Budnik rebuilt the lead to seven. After exchanging a couple of points, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to come within two, 34-32, before Doogan and Alston combined for four points to regain a six-point lead, 38-32. After another 5-0 spurt from the opposition to cut the Spider advantage to one, 38-37, Alyssa Jimenez ended the quarter with a driving layup to send the Spiders into the final 10 minutes with a three-point lead, 40-37.
Ullstrom opened the final frame with a trey before SJU responded with a layup for a 43-39 UR lead. Doogan then completed the hoop-and-harm for a seven-point advantage before the Hawks managed a lone free throw, 46-40. Doogan then went 1-2 from the charity stripe while Sweeney finessed a layup to put the Spiders up by nine, 49-40. After a couple of miscues from the Spider defense, the Hawks posted back-to-back layups to come within five, 49-44. Ullstrom then sparked a 7-0 run for Richmond as Sweeney posted a key layup followed by a triple in front of the Spider bench to hand Richmond its largest lead of the contest, 56-44. Doogan then went 2-2 from the free throw line following a 5-0 spurt from the opposition while Hill scored the final point for the Spiders from a made free throw. The Hawks managed to put off a final layup with three seconds left to end the game with the Spiders on top, 59-51.

- The Spiders were led by Budnik, who posted 12 points in addition to a team-high seven rebounds. She also added two assists and two steals.
- Ally Sweeney (11 pts) and Maggie Doogan (11 pts) also finished the game in double figures as Sweeney shot 4 of 7 from the floor and 2 of 3 from deep and added five boards and two assists. Doogan also ended the game with five boards, a team-high four assists, a block and a steal.
- Five Spiders ended the contest with five rebounds in Sweeney, Katie Hill, Doogan, Anna Camden and Faith Alston.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 20 of 52 (38.5%) from the floor and struggled from deep, shooting 7-27 (25.9%) from beyond the arc and 12 of 16 (75%) from the charity stripe. Richmond also added 39 rebounds, 13 assists, five blocks, six steals and 10 points off 12 Hawk turnovers.
- Doogan posted her 24th straight game in double figures while Budnik saw her third straight game in double figures.
- Alston brought her career-point total to 1,304, the second-highest active career point total on the Spider roster.
- Richmond posted its 11th straight win, the program's longest win streak since the Spiders won 15 straight from 12/29/89-2/10/90.
- The Spiders snapped the Hawks' eight-game win streak dating back to a 72-65 win against Fordham on Jan. 15.
