Regular Season Champions! Spiders Stretch Win Streak to 14, Claim Outright A-10 Crown with Win Over VCU

RICHMOND, Va. Maggie Doogan dropped 33 points Sunday afternoon as the University of Richmond women's basketball team picked up a crosstown rivalry win at VCU, 68-55, en route to securing the outright Atlantic 10 Conference regular season title and the No. 1 seed in next week's A-10 Championship in Henrico, Va. The Spiders also pushed their win streak to 14-straight games following the win, one shy of the program record (15 straight), and improved to 24-5 overall and 15-1 in A-10 action while the Rams fell to 12-16 overall and 6-10 in conference play.

How it Happened
VCU opened the game with a layup before Ally Sweeney responded on the other end with a layup of her own to tie the game at two. VCU then managed to net a triple before Doogan kept the game within one with a layup on the other end. After VCU recorded another triple and layup, Doogan and Faith Alston combined for seven points to give Richmond its first lead of the game, 9-8. Another triple from the Rams gave VCU back the lead, 11-9, but Ullstrom responded with a layup and two free throws with 2:30 left in the opening frame. Anna Camden and Doogan combined for five points to end the quarter as the Rams answered each Spider bucket, ending the quarter deadlocked at 18-18.
Each team opened the second 10 minutes with a layup before a 5-0 spurt from the opposition gave VCU a five-point lead, 25-20. Addie Budnik ended the scoring drought for the Spiders with a layup, while Katie Hill brought Richmond back within one with a layup of her own. Doogan then gave UR back the lead with two points, 26-25. The Rams then connected on a triple to go ahead by two, but a layup from Budnik tied the game at 28, sparking a 6-0 run that pushed the Spiders ahead 34-28 and forced VCU into a timeout. Out of the timeout, VCU hit a triple to cut the UR lead to 34-31. Alston added a free throw while VCU added another trey, sending UR into the locker room with a 35-34 advantage.
Doogan opened the third quarter with a layup before VCU hit a mid-range jumper on the other end to stay within one, 37-36. A triple from Doogan then pushed the lead to four, 40-36. After exchanging a few more points, Doogan posted five points while Budnik chipped in two to give the Spiders a 50-41 advantage. VCU ended the third quarter with a jumper, cutting the Spider lead to 50-43 heading into the final 10 minutes.
VCU cut the Richmond lead to five, 50-45, to open the fourth quarter before Doogan responded on the other end with a layup. VCU added another layup before a triple from Sweeney pushed the UR lead to eight, 55-47. After another two points from VCU, Ullstrom and Doogan combined for four points for a 10-point Spider lead, 59-49, with 5:39 remaining. Budnik then sparked a 9-0 run for the Spiders, pushing the UR lead to 19, 68-49. VCU ended the game with a 6-0 run, but the Spider reserves held on for the 68-55 win.

Notes on the Game
- With the win, Richmond clinched its second straight regular season title, the first consecutive titles in program history. Previously, Richmond won the regular season in 1984, 1990 and earned co-regular season champions in 1991 in the CAA and also adds to the program's first A-10 regular season title in 2024.
- The Spiders extended their win streak to 14-straight games, one win shy of the program record of 15-straight games during the 1989-90 season.
- Richmond evened the all-time series against VCU at 47-47, dating back to 1941, and has won the past five meetings against the Rams.
- The Spiders were led by Maggie Doogan, who finished the game with 33 points on 12 of 16 from the field and 3 of 5 from deep. She also led the team in rebounds with six and added four assists and two blocks.
- Ally Sweeney also recorded four assists in addition to five rebounds while Addie Budnik added nine points and led the team with three steals.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 25 of 46 (54.3%) from the field, 7 of 17 (41.2%) from deep and 11 of 12 (91.7%) from the charity stripe.
