Spider Baseball Falls to Penn State in Opening Game of Central Virginia Challenge

Richmond, now 7-2 on the year, will host Boston College Saturday for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Pitt Field on ESPN+ in the second game of the Central Virginia Challenge.
Penn State bats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over Richmond by the second inning. Esteban Rodriguez allowed three runs in the first in his shortest outing of the season, going one plus innings of work.
Richmond got on the board in the second, scratching a run across on two hits and a walk but stranded three on the bases.
Glenn Smith tossed one and two-thirds of an inning on the mound, allowing four runs, three earned on three hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Penn State's lead ballooned to 8-1 after three innings. Jackson Kraemer got the final out in the third and tossed a scoreless fourth, despite allowing one hit, a walk and an error.
Penn State added a run in the fifth, but Richmond erupted for three runs on four hits and a walk to make it 9-4. Aaron Whitley led off with a base hit and scored on Jordan Jaffe's base hit. Jack Arcamone pushed in Phil Bernstein who drew a walk while Jaffe came home on Joey Wilga's third pinch hit base hit of the season.
Penn State put the game out of reach, adding a run in the sixth and seven in the seventh.
Jaffe hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for his team leading third home run and 11th and 12th RBI of the season. An at bat prior, Bernstein led off the frame with a single to right center to extend his hit streak to seven games. Richmond loaded the bases with no outs on a double by Arcamone and walks from Brady O'Brien and Trevor Doesnbach, but all three were stranded to end the game.
Paul Witkop made his collegiate debut allowing one unearned run on two hits in an inning of work. Sam Young followed with one run on one hit, two walks and two strikeouts. Dane Armson allowed five runs on four walks and one hit in a third of an inning while Hugh Hill took over to close out the seventh, allowing two runs on two hits for his collegiate debut.
