Doogan Showcases Hometown Heroics, Lifts Spiders to Win at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA ¬ Behind Maggie Doogan's eighth career double-double, the University of Richmond women's basketball team picked up a 72-53 win at La Salle Wednesday evening. Doogan finished the contest with 22 points and 11 rebounds and helped the Spiders improve to 19-5 on the season and 10-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference while La Salle fell to 8-17 overall and 2-10 in the A-10. The Spiders also pushed their win streak to nine straight games.

How it Happened
Doogan opened the scoring for Richmond with a layup in front of her hometown crowd before La Salle tied the game at two with two made free throws. Addie Budnik then capitalized from down low, sparking a 7-0 run for the Spiders to build a 9-2 lead. The Explorers then posted back-to-back triples to cut the lead to one, 9-8, but two free throws from Rachel Ullstrom got Richmond back into the scoring column. The two teams continued to exchange points throughout the quarter as the Spiders ended the first 10 minutes with a slight lead, 21-18.
The Explorers again scratched back within one, 21-20, off a jumper to open the second quarter. Doogan again scored from down low, while Ally Sweeney posted an easy layup following an Explorer turnover to push the lead to five, 25-20. Doogan then reached double figures from a layup, sparking a 9-0 run with efforts courtesy of Faith Alston, Sweeney and Budnik. The Explorers managed to post a layup, but Ullstrom immediately responded with one of her own for a 36-22 lead to send UR into the locker room.
Doogan posted an easy layup courtesy of Sweeney to open the third quarter, 38-22, before LAS responded on the other end with two points. After exchanging a couple more buckets, a layup from Doogan sparked a 6-0 run for the Spiders to build a 19-point lead, 46-27. La Salle ended the scoring drought with a triple and followed the play with another jumper to cut the lead to 46-32. Faith Alston and Ullstrom then combined for four points to build a 50-32 advantage. After a lone triple from La Salle, Alyssa Jimenez posted a driving layup while the Explorers added one of their own to head into the final 10 minutes with a 52-37 Spider lead.
Ullstrom pushed her point total to 13 with an and-one play to open the fourth quarter before La Salle responded with back-to-back layups to cut the Richmond lead to 14, 55-41. The two teams exchanged buckets before back-to-back triples from the opposition put the Explorers within 10, 59-49. Each team then put up two points before Anna Camden sparked a 5-0 run for the Spiders for a 66-51 advantage. La Salle managed a final jumper as efforts from Ullstrom and Budnik ended the game with a 6-0 run for Richmond to take the game 72-53.
Notes on the Game
· The Spiders were paced by Maggie Doogan, who finished the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds, marking her eighth career double double.
· Two other Spiders finished the game in double figures in Rachel Ullstrom (20 pts) and Addie Budnik (11 pts).
· Budnik becomes the third leading scorer in Spider women's basketball history and also notched her 100th career game in double figures. She surpassed Pam Bryant (1,766 pts) and Kate Flavin (1,770 pts) on the top-scorers list.
· Maggie Doogan moves to No. 15 of all-time leading scorers at Richmond, passing Ebony Tanner (1,215 pts).
· Ally Sweeney led the team with four assists while Budnik and Alyssa Jimenez, in her first start for the Spiders, picked up three.
· Anna Camden picked up a team-high two blocks in the contest while Doogan, Ullstrom and Jimenez posted two steals each.
· As a team, the Spiders shot 32 of 58 (55.2%) from the floor and were slow beyond the arc, as Budnik hit the lone triple for the Spiders in 16 attempts. The 6.3 3FG% was the team's lowest in a victory since a 5.9% output against Saint Joseph's on Jan. 23, 2019. UR went 7 of 11 (63.6%) from the charity stripe and added 27 rebounds, 15 assists, three blocks and nine steals. In addition, the Spiders posted 25 points off 21 Explorer turnovers while the team posted 62 points in the paint, its highest total of the season, surpassing 48 points in the paint against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 15, 2025.
· Richmond pushed its win streak to nine straight games.

The Spiders continue their Pennsylvania road trip on Sunday, taking on Duquesne in Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. on CBSSN. The Spiders will return to the Robins Center on Feb. 13, hosting Saint Joseph's at 8 p.m. with the game being broadcast on Peacock.
