Spider Baseball Drops Second Game of Series to Hawks

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped a 12-5 decision to Saint Joseph's Saturday at Smithson Field to move to 19-4 on the year and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 action. SJU improves to 8-13, 3-2. The series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Smithson Field. There will not be an ESPN+ stream.
After SJU took the lead in the second with a solo home run, Richmond got on the board in the fifth. Connor Larson walked to lead off the frame, moved up on Cole Palmeri's sacrifice bunt then scored on Aaron Whitley's double to center to tie the game. With Jordan Jaffe at the plate, Whitley stole third and scored on Jaffe's base hit into right field to take a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks answered with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, knocking Spiders starter Chase Topolski out of the game. Topolski took the loss, allowing four runs on one hit, four walks and three strikeouts over four plus innings of work. Glenn Smith, taking over for Topolski in the fifth, allowed four runs on four hits getting one out via a strikeout. Tyler Rigot got the final two outs of the fifth but not before he gave up a two-run home run. Rigot tossed a clean sixth but gave up a solo home run in the seventh, as the Hawks lead rose to 12-3.
DJ Pacheco laced a single through the middle of the field to plate two runs in the eighth, picking up Jack Arcamone, who led off with a walk, and Brady O'Brien, who collected his second double of the contest.
The Spiders got two on in the top of the ninth, but they were left stranded.
