ARLINGTON, VA – The University of Richmond fell 9-7 to George Washington Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
Richmond, now 25-13 on the season and 7-11 in league play, returns to action Tuesday when the squad heads to Farmville to face Longwood. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
GW got on the board in the first, but Richmond answered with a five run top of the second. Jack Arcamone drew a four-pitch walk and wasn't on for long. Brady O'Brien hit a two-run home run for his team-leading 13th of the year over the centerfield wall. D.J. Pacheco followed with a one-out double then scored on Trevor Dosenbach's base hit through the infield to give Richmond a 3-2 lead. Aaron Whitley got in on the hit parade and hit a two-run home run, his seventh of the year, over the wall in right center to give UR a 5-2 lead.
GW scratched across two runs in the bottom of the second. UR starter Dylan Siesky got tagged for four runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter in one and two-thirds of an inning. Chayse Gruber took over on the mound and got the strikeout to end GW's rally.
In the top of the fourth, Whitley scored from second on Jordan Jaffe's base hit to left field to push UR's lead to 6-4.
GW tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, tallying two runs on two hits off Gruber.
In the top of the sixth, UR took a 7-6 lead on Arcamone's sacrifice fly, scoring Whitley.
Hugh Hill made his second appearance of the weekend in the sixth, replacing Gruber. After giving up a hit he was lifted for Jackson Hinchliffe. GW scored two runs to take an 8-7 lead on a base hit through the infield, catching the UR defense on their heels. GW added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, to make it 9-7.
Tyler Rigot got the final two outs in the bottom of the eighth. He allowed one hit off the right field wall, but Phil Bernstein threw the runner out at second as he was trying to stretch the single to a double to end the inning.
