Spider Baseball Drops Series Opener to Billikens

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped the Atlantic 10 Conference series opener 6-3 to Saint Louis Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.
The second game of the series has been moved up to an 11 a.m. first pitch Saturday at Pitt Field due to rain forecasted for the area.
Richmond, 26-14 on the year and 7-12 in league action, scored in the first inning when Jordan Jaffe hit a sacrifice fly to score Aaron Whitley. Whitley connected a base hit, advancing to second on a wild pitch and took third on Phil Bernstein's ground out.
Jackson Hinchliffe worked around three hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out three over three scoreless innings.
Chayse Gruber took over, kept the Billikens off the board for two more innings. Gruber got tagged with the loss after the first two SLU batters reached in the sixth and then scored after Tyler Rigot got an out on a sacrifice fly and an RBI hit off Ryan Bilka.
Saint Louis (24-17, 12-7 A-10) tacked on two more runs in the in the seventh on a two RBI base hit.
The Spiders answered in the bottom of the seventh, tallying two runs when Michael Elko laced a hit through the infield to right center. Jack Arcamone led off with a walk before Braedy O'Brien doubled off the top of the wall in centerfield.
Saint Louis tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth to push their lead out to 6-3 off Richmond reliever Ryan Bilka. Bilka allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks and struck out three over three and two-thirds of an inning of work.
