AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond's women's lacrosse team fell 19-10 to UMass on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. With the loss, the Spiders drop to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in Atlantic 10 play while UMass improves to 9-3 overall and 7-0 in league play.
"Today, the team that worked harder for four quarters won the game," said Head Coach Anne Harrington.
"We had a strong first quarter in every category and then let a lot of controllables get away from us. It was a tough day, and we will learn from it as we continue to take the season one day at a time and one game at a time. We remain focused on our process and getting better."
Whitney Liebler led with five points on one goal and four assists. Grace Muldoon earned a hat trick, and Colleen Quinn and Juliana Stanley both scored two goals. Alexis Morton and Bridget Lonsinger each netted a goal.
In goal, Abby Francioli collected 11 saves in 60 minutes of play.
UMass was first to score, but Richmond quickly responded with a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead. Both teams exchanged goals at the end of the first quarter, but the Spiders took the 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Minutewomen outscored Richmond 7-1 and led 9-5 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, Richmond opened with a goal to cut the deficit to three, 9-6. In response, UMass scored four straight goals to take a seven-point lead, 13-6. Closing the third quarter, the Spiders scored a goal but trailed 13-7 going into the final quarter. In the last frame of the game, UMass outscored the Spiders 6-3 to seal their win.
Richmond is back in action on Wednesday, April 9, at 1 p.m. for its final regular-season midweek game.
