Richmond Edged by George Mason in Defensive Clash

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason held the Spiders to a season-low 37 points as the University of Richmond women's basketball team dropped a 46-37 decision Monday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action at EagleBank Arena. With the loss, Richmond saw its 11-game win streak come to an end and moved to 22-5 overall and 12-2 in conference play while the Patriots improved to 17-8 overall and 12-2 in the A-10.

How It Happened
Alicia Newell opened the game with a 3-pointer before George Mason answered with one of its own to even the score. Maggie Doogan and Rachel Ullstrom combined for five points to give Richmond an 8-3 edge, but back-to-back triples from the Patriots swung the lead to 9-8 at the 2:49 mark. Ally Sweeney knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Spiders back in front, yet Mason closed the quarter with three points to take a 12-11 lead into the second.
George Mason scored the first four points of the second quarter to stretch its advantage to 16-11. Newell ended the drought with a free throw, sparking a 7-0 Richmond run that gave the Spiders an 18-16 lead. The Patriots responded with a triple from Kennedy Harris to regain the lead, but Doogan answered with a jumper to push Richmond ahead 20-19. Mason closed the half with a layup to take a 21-20 edge into the break.
Out of halftime, Mason opened on a 9-0 run before Doogan stopped the surge with a jumper to make it 30-22. A Patriot layup extended the lead to 10, but Newell converted an and-one to cut the deficit to 32-25 with 4:01 remaining in the third. A 5-0 Mason spurt pushed the margin to 37-25 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Tierra Simon buried a 3-pointer late, and Mason added a free throw to send Richmond into the final period trailing 38-28.
Ullstrom scored on a layup to open the fourth quarter before Mason answered on the other end. Sweeney connected from beyond the arc to trim the deficit to 40-33. The Patriots rebuilt the lead to 11 at 46-35 before Rayne Wright netted two free throws to end the game with Richmond falling, 46-37.

Notes on the Game
- Ullstrom led Richmond with nine points. Doogan added seven points, eight rebounds and a career-high five blocks, while Sweeney dished out a team-high four assists.
- Doogan's nine points snapped a 28-game double-figure scoring streak dating back to last season. Mason also ended Richmond's 11-game winning streak and handed the Spiders their first loss since Dec. 30 at Rhode Island.
- Richmond moved to 8-3 in road games this season.
- The Spiders scored fewer than 40 points for the first time since Feb. 27, 2019 at Massachusetts.
- Richmond shot 13-of-49 from the field, 6-of-24 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. The Spiders finished with 36 rebounds, nine assists and seven blocks.
- The all-time series against the Patriots moves to 44-27 in favor of Richmond.
